Apple TV...what is it good for?
« on: February 27, 2014, 02:55:10 PM »
Other than mirroring what you can watch on your iDevice, what is it good for?

Does it offer more than simply watching netflix on your phone show up on the TV rather than watching the app built into your smart tv? (which admittedly is buggy...)

Have $100 at BestBuy, thinking about picking one up so my kid will stop sitting in the family room staring at the iPad for videos and use the giant flat screen for which I paid an arm and a leg...

AirPlay and iTunes streaming.

If you don't already live in the Apple eco system, you're probably better off with a Roku.

PC's fpr computers, but a bevy of ipads and iphones for personal devices...

My Denon receiver has AirPlay but that's audio only...

Just trying to figure out if it's worth it, or if it's a bunch of redundant features available on my fairly new smart tv (Samsung).

Plus I have $100 at BestBuy burning a hole in my wallet.

I have 2 apple TV's one at my business and one at home. I stream slideshows and play my own canned music at work in the waiting room, at home it is netflix, purchased content, and airplay from an i-device. I also used air parrot to stream hockey from my laptop to the waiting room when the Olympics were on.

I also have a linux box that runs XBMC for other types of content, but it takes so long to load and find content that my wife leaves the room before we actually get anything running. Apple also broke airplay when it did some security patch a while back, and so my iPhone would only stream audio, I could not get video playback to work. I have no experience with Roku or the android boxes, some techno types really have good setups and find methods of streaming seemingly endless content from who-knows-where.

I am an unapologetic Apple fan boy.

I just replaced my Apple TV with a Roku 3.

I've had a Roku2 for a couple years, friend of mine got Apple TV. His was more expensive, slower, and didn't have as many channels available. Most useful channels are Media player, Netflix, and Crackle. Probably not worth it if your TV can get that already.

It can turn your TV into a photo slide show using your iCloud shared photos...

Or take the credit and buy something at BBuy that you can readily convert into cash via Craigslist...

I use our AppleTV for watching Netflix; the UI is much better than Tivo's.  I also like that it'll show my photo stream pictures as a slide show after being idle for a few minutes (PRO TIP: If you don't want your naughty cell phone pics to show up in front of your family, make sure to delete them from your Photo Stream album in addition to just from the camera roll.  I've heard.  From friends.)

Caveat: I got my AppleTV for free, and I've never used a Roku.  I have a few friends that work for Roku, though, and they're solid engineers.  I'm not surprised that a product they worked on is getting good reviews from y'alls.

I'm NOT an Apple guy, but my boyfriend is.  He has one and it's totally great.  You can watch lots of content on it (we have HBO, Netflix and Hulu Plus, so there's tons of crap on there), but apparently the Roku is even better.

On the Apple TV, you have to go into a 'channel' (think 'Netflix' channel) in order to look at content, search for movies, etc.  On a Roku, the search is global across all 'channels.'  Why does this matter?  Say you want to see a certain movie.  On an Apple TV you have to go into each channel, search for the movie, and then go back to the main screen when you don't find it.  On a Roku, you search once and get the results, regardless of what channel it is on.  Again, this is my understanding and perhaps Chris could confirm/deny since he has owned both.

If I were in the market, I would probably get a Roku, but the AppleTV is an excellent product besides that one complaint.

If you want a more extensive listing of online content availability make sure to check out Can I Stream it?

It's not set-top box specific. But, it will let you find where legal downloads are available and the costs.

Honestly, while I really like my Apple TV and my Roku, I'm not convinced one is sooooooo much better than the other. Everyone raves about how the Roku interface is so much better than the Apple TV and I just don't see it; it's all still drill-in, back-out, shitty letter selection with the remote (unless you've bound a keyboard or your phone/tablet), and such. The killer feature - IMO - that the Roku has over the Apple TV is cross-channel searching. * shrug *

I mean, it seems to work fine ( assuming you're talking about the Roku ). The search IN the Netflix app kinda sucks, but I do most of that on the computer and just add it to my list anyway.

Google's search + Roku's content and channel model would be the cat's ass.

Neflix and profiles on Roku would be great.  >:(

Netflix is on the Roku. Netflix's profiles work fine in the app.

I do agree, on-device profiles for different users would be cool.
