Proud Parent Brag
« on: February 20, 2014, 06:34:36 PM »
Our daughter graduates from University of Maryland this spring with Bachelor Degrees in Mathematics and Physics.  However, this brag is not about that.

Next year, she starts her PhD program XXXXXXXX/

She's come a long way for the granddaughter of a baker.

Modified because my daughter still has friends who don't know what they'll be doing yet and would prefer they find out from her.  :-X

She felt a little bad about turning down Harvard.

I'm happy she has no aspirations to be president.

Sorry - my 8 year-old daughter has already declared she's gonna be the first woman president.

May God have mercy on our souls.

Hard work pays off! Well done Whip and Whip Whelp!
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

All kidding aside, I really wish advanced mathematics and sciences could find a way to attract more of our brightest students. And not towards the financial/money game. I hope she's doing this because she loves the subject and not because she thinks it will lead to a job that pays big bucks.

Congrats to her though. She earned it!

Her brother is an international tax lawyer with a big firm.  He wanted her to go into patent law, but she just wasn't interested.  She loves working on problems that have no clear solution.  Once the Higgs boson was proven, she lost interest in high energy particles.  As she put it, she didn't want to be the guy who dots the I's and cross the T's.

That's when she moved to a project in general relativity.

Dodged a bullet on the patent law.  As far as I can tell, that is a completely soul-sucking job.
