It's raining!!
« on: February 02, 2014, 09:47:43 AM »
First recorded precipitation in 54 days. :D  Though it won't actually help our drought.  :(  Bobby, are you still up near Healdsburg?  I read that that area is slated to run out of water in the next 60-120 days.   We're trying to reduce our water consumption personally, but we don't have a lawn or garden and we already take short showers etc so I'm not sure what else to do.

Cut back on mixed drinks and switch to imported beer.

Seriously, I realize that is not an option for you quite yet.  It bad out there right now.  We've gone so far as too start thinking about changing plans for our next trip to avoid the area.

Yay!!! Nothing like a good rain to clear the air, too. We had rain this morning, but now it has cleared up enough to see the snow on the Black Forest hills across the river

Ok, I admit that I didn't have to describe it quite like that, but I still get the giggles when I think of what I can see out of my own apartment windows. I am weak and I can't help it!!!

I feel your pain. We've been experiencing similar conditions here in the panhandle for the last 3 years. Moisture of any kind is always a welcome blessing.

We'll truck some of our snow out there and drop it in the lakes for you. We're running out of places to put it!

Don't do too much. Even though it's the right thing to do. Here's why:

Do you remember the last drought in CA that led to mandatory water conservation efforts? Yeah that was in the 70's right along with the gas crisis. My family had friends living in Marin county. They started conserving before the local water authority instituted mandatory cuts in water use - a flat percentage over whatever history you had before. I don't recall the percentage and I don't recall the time frame for the history but our friends were hosed (so to speak). The husband even contacted the water authority for an exception - no exceptions.

Here's what they did - literally no water went down the drain. Well as little as possible. They put bricks in the toilet tank to reduce the amount flushed (this was before low-flush toilets). They did not use the dishwasher or the washing machine. They washed everything by hand and saved the gray water to water the plants and trees (forget the lawn; the grass died). The water you use to brush your teeth? Saved and on the plants. Mostly the established trees. Forget a shower - they took sponge baths… and that water went on the plants. Washing your hair? Nah - use dry shampoo.

And these were the days before bottle water…. so forget about that - how much do you think bottled water will go up in CA as the drought progresses?

I would check with your local water authority and find out what their plans are.

We're going to be screwed in Sacramento this summer. Some water districts will have their intake pipes high and dry at the reservoirs in another month or so if we don't get any good storms soon.

We're already talking about letting front lawn die off and replace it with some fake turf.

Rained a little down here last night too. Unfortunately we need rain ever night for the next 45 days to make a dent.
