Pop music is still shite
« on: January 30, 2014, 04:25:51 PM »
Last night while attempting to read a wireless networking cert book,  my step daughter was doing her homework and listening to "her" music on itunes. Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, yada yada. After almost making it through five songs I realized that pop music is still vial, empty, soulless disposable shite. Basically just egotistical douche nozzle with a beat machine making karaoke music for all the brain dead fans to sing a long too.

90% of everything is shit.

However, Rockpile was pop, as was Led Zep, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Dave Mathews . . . .

It is easy to disparage success, and cling to the obscure as a sign of hipness, but, yeah, 90% of anything is shit.
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

i'm friends w/ the monster in my head

i doubt that i know what pop is anymore but there are a couple catchy tunes on the radio as I flip stations that I don't immediately turn off...  memorable obviously.  ???

i've actually been listening to more country and NPR than anything else.  i like the band perry doing "gravedigger" or "better dig 2".  she's creepy.

True, something I noticed right away when I went downstairs and fired up "The Rain Song" and "The Ocean". The crap that was playing upstairs was all voice with some beat machine creating a beat. The stuff downstairs had INSTRUMENTS! You could close your eyes and the piano, violins, bass, drums and guitar all created the scene and the voice told a story. Difference between "a band" and a pop star?

I'm a fan of nearly all music.  Well, acid rock makes my ears bleed, and the creaming into the mic stuff is a bot over the top, but I do enjoy most music.

I don't have any modern pop music in my library. At least as it's defined over the last 30 years or so. I think I have 1 rap song though it's possibly hip-hop. A couple country albums, and some misc. old school funk. Some borderline techno stuff. My library is mostly rock (including "alternative" whatever that means these days), metal, blues, jazz, and classical.

Musical genres are close to politics or religion. There's something for everyone. No one agrees on what defines them, but there are plenty who will try to define them for you.

Pop music is something that I just can't listen to!
These days, I listen to a lot of old and non main stream country. I've also rediscovered the rock from my youth, like Zeplin and the Dead. I listen to some classical too, like this one. Probably the most beautiful "song" I have every heard.

I've never been a huge fan of most mainstream music. Not because I want to be edgy, but I just don't like it.

There are some things I like, but not a lot.

Thanks, fellas -- I am feeling younger with most every post on this thread ;-}

I love Rockpile/Edmunds/Lowe. I listen to alot of power pop but not much of it is ever on the radio - the very reason I subscribed to XM.

Probably hitting close to the 90% mark on that list for me. I think its all shit but Led Zeppelin. I'll take heat for it, but the Beatles are the most over rated band on the planet. I think they suck and don't understand the appeal.

Obviously, everyone's taste is different. While I liked a lot of music from the 60s/70s, The Beatles will always be near the top of my list of great bands. Much of their music has stood the test of time and I know of no current band that will have that to say in 50 years. . Maybe someone can enlighten me on that count.  Funny thing though, these days I find the music of George Harrison my favorite of that group.

I agree with most of you but not all of it is crap. I listen to almost everything except the hard screaming and the hard rap. I grew up with statler brothers, jim croce, ccr, alabama, pink floyd, and phil collins from my parents. While my older siblings were introducing me to aerosmith, bon jovi, g-n-r, motley crew, rnotley crew run dmc, I was finding everything else in between.

I love alternative, hip hop, som pop, older country. Some of my favorites right now are Adele, Imagine Dragons, Of mice and men, kate nash, mumford and sons, but never get tired of Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, 80's, and of course 90 hip hop.

I guess I'm just all over the road but I think music ebbs and flows like everything else.

Taylor Swift is mesmerizing with the mute enabled.
I'm good with pretty much anything other than opera, expletive laced rap, or country.
Commercial "radio" is a wasteland.

Because you can't quite figure out what it is about her face/eyes that's wrong.  But your subconcious keeps telling you it is.  Or is that just me?

Taylor Swift is mesmerizing with the mute enabled.
Because you can't quite figure out what it is about her face/eyes that's wrong.  But your subconcious keeps telling you it is.  Or is that just me?

Its not just you.

Much of their music has stood the test of time and I know of no current band that will have that to say in 50 years. . Maybe someone can enlighten me on that count.

I would have to say Red Hot Chili Peppers is quickly apporaching that mark, first album realease in 1983 and still currently producing and selling new albums. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't heard or doesn't like at least 1 RHCP song.

Probably hitting close to the 90% mark on that list for me. I think its all shit but Led Zeppelin. I'll take heat for it, but the Beatles are the most over rated band on the planet. I think they suck and don't understand the appeal.

While not a fan I respect their accomplishments. Music didn't grab my ear until I was 10 or 12 (1973ish) and from the get go I was a Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith fan.  As far as music goes I am stuck in the 70s I guess. Its really not a bad place to be.  ;)
