Keys over Christmas?
« on: December 21, 2020, 08:48:32 AM »
There are 3 National Parks in FL we need to get checked off the list.  Is there any reason why the Christmas holiday wouldn't be a good time to make that happen?  We'd be looking at staying in the parks away from people and just zipping into and out of where we need to go.  Right now it's just a theory.  But we're pretty dynamic and could make this come together with a couple hours of prep time if need be.

Nov. Dec. is pretty much peak times for the keys and COVID hasn't slowed it down a whole lot. My daughter was there over Thanksgiving and said it was packed. They had the same thought as you, but said apparently everyone else did too.
the above are merely the ramblings of a hamfisted fuckwit who has broken too many helmets.

Which ones?  Everglades NP might have a campsite available.  Best to call and check before departure.  From there, all the southern parks are within an hour or so except the island fort.  If that’s your goal, double check the NPS.gov site to see if the ferries are running.

ETA: looks like they’re running with masks and the usual precautions.  https://www.drytortugas.com/

Yeah, looks like it's not the best time to go.  The whole point of traveling to NP type places is to get away from people.  Don't particularly cherish the idea of going where there will be more people than usual just to bag a couple parks.  Maybe some other time.  We were planning on Hatfield / McCoys as a back up.  Then we looked at the weather.  Looks like it's gonna be a redbox Christmas at the compound.

Snowmobile tour perhaps? And you can visit Clay, and Max, and Mr. Awesome, and the rest of the MI gang on the way there!

That actually sounds like a really good time but if I'm going to spend a bunch of money, it's going to be a multi-day tour through Yellowstone.  Some day...

CB and I just did that very thing (south FL NPs and such) Dec 19 - Dec 31. Crowds weren't an issue. We had a delightful time. My pics are on the 'gram.
