Holy winter batman...
« on: January 27, 2014, 05:41:09 AM »
This has been one for the record books.  Another snow day today.  We picked up 6" in about 3 hours last night.

I actually love it- I love the 4 seasons, and I love this powerful winter- but wow.  It is amazing.  One of the biggest issues we are beginning to face in west Michigan is what to do with all the snow.  After a point the parking lot piles get so big (even after being re-piled by loaders) they don't have room for all the snow and it needs to be trucked out.

I just love how the weather people in our area can't get it right for anything. They predict sun and its cloudy, they say snow showers with no more than. A coating the other day and we got 3 inches, they predicted 4-6 inches last week and we got .5. All over the map. Worse than normal poor performance.

The weather models they use for prediction are skewed by climate change.

I agree with Clay. I love powerful weather.

It's this time of year though when I seem to be listening to Jimmy Buffett more.

I also love living in Michigan & the changing of the seasons! But I've also been spoiled the past several years w/ very mild winters here. I'm just tired of pipes freezing on people everywhere & the wind. I don't mind the cold, it's just that gosh darn wind blowing the snow & making it 2 feet deep in front of my gate & garage doors! I have finally run out of areas to put snow on my properties from plowing that I have to call in Lester Bros. to come truck it out to wherever they truck it too!

Yesterday the weatherman predicted 72 degrees...it got to 80.  I hate when that happens..  8)

I used to appreciate harsh winters growing up in the mid west...not anymore, been in the south too long.

I just went out to pick up a friend's kid.  She has to work and her daughter ahd a snow day, so she's over here playing our my daughter today.  The main roads are plowed- our neighborhood road and the country road to get to my neighborhood is nearly closed with 4'-5' drifts.  4wd trucks passing through are the only thing keeping it open.  If the wind picks up it's gonna close for sure.  Good thing we have a good stock of bacon and eggs!   :bigok:

It was 59 yesterday, so I got out for a three hour ride. It's only 9 here right now and we aren't going to warm up much, so basically a 50 degree temperature swing in 24 hours.

I don't mind snow, but this cold has got to go. Forecast is for -15F again tonight.

SE Michigan is at record levels of snowfall for January and we've still got a few days left.  We've also set a few records for low temperatures well into the negatives.  It appears it'll happen again tonight with a forecast of -11F.  The only good about all this is the wife can't slide off the driveway anymore.  The piles on either side are over 2' tall and where the driveway meets the street is well over 3'.

I'm getting some serious PMS too.

Snow day #3 in a row.  It's almost getting too deep for my Enticers- it's getting to be long-track time.  We have 1' of powder and 1-2 feet of older snow on the ground.  A local school near the lake is having trouble staying open- due to it's location it has been completely covered by snowdrifts.  You see the gym roof and chimney vents sticking up, but the whole building itself is buried!  Crazy.

Here are some stats- last year vs this year so far:

I cannot understand why they didn't close schools and more people didn't stay home nor why nearly the entire city, including schools all let out and headed home at nearly the exact same time....after the weather had turned bad.

How is it he entire city seems to have been gotten by surprise by this storm.  Wasn't it well predicted?

Here is what my folks are dealing with closer to the lake.  Granted it's not this tall everywhere, but this is less than a mile from them, both ways.  They have 5-6 foot banks right by the farm, then bare in a couple of wind-blown spots.  I was in Holland today so I grabbed a few pictures:

You can't see it well, but the road narrows to 1 1/2 lanes here.  The bank is about 8' high and about 15 feet wide- they can't push it back.  They have an industrial snowblower headed their way to deal with spots like this:

The problem is that in the country you have miles of fields where the snow blows then starts drifting over the roads,  They knock it back with the plows, but that builds the bank higher making for larger drifts.  My buddy took this shot about 2 miles from my parent's farm:

Just got 3" of snow here but it was warm when it started so there's a quarter to half inch of icy slush under it. There are neighbor cars stuck and abandoned in the street. Fortunately as a computer geek, I can work from home :)

Well, we have the opposite of meteorologist hype this morning.  They said 1"-2".  We have 4"-6" on the ground with blowing snow- my road is down to 1 lane again and at this point we have a 2 hour school delay.
