Yesterday was a big day.  Kim came and got me at work with the XT in the back of the truck.  We took it to DC and delivered it to its new owner.  Incredibly generous, yes, but I had an ulterior motive.  The versys could have been snatched up over the weekend and I didn't want to take that chance.  The heart of Georgetown is NOT a good place to maneuver a full size truck and try to find a place to set up ramps and offload a bike.  We did it.  New owner was happy as could be.  Kim had put a lot of effort into cleaning it up and it showed.  So we grabbed some sammiches and headed out to go see the Versys.  I found this dudes place by using the satellite imagery and the photos he posted on CL.  He was mildly freaked out when I showed up at his garage knowing nothing but the neighborhood he lived in.  That was fun.  Anywho, the bike is VERY clean but it has some issues:

Right side bar end is slightly miffed from a drop.  I was hoping that would be the end of that.  Fortunately, we're kinda a-holes...I mean, thorough when evaluating a used bike.  Found the right side fairing nubbin that pops into the grommet was broken off.  There is a tiny scratch on the tank down by the seat.  Meh.  But then I took it around the block and saw that the bars were not where they're supposed to be.  We got back and jumped into a bunch of analysis and I concluded that those huge "handlebar holders" they use on the versys got tweaked when it was dropped.  They're huge and he had bar risers on top of them just creating more leverage to transfer force to those holders.  I don't believe the bar is bent but even if it is, that's a cheap fix.  I don't believe the forks are tweaked because the amount of force sustained on a light drop shouldn't be able to do that.  Plus, they look perfect.  So it began.  He claimed he didn't know about the fairing nub or the bar holders and was really kind of upset.  Either that it existed or that I found it.  Either way, Kim looked up the parts.  100 bucks a pop.  Looks like a 20 minute job.

So I told him he could go to the trouble of trying to tear down and repair a bike that he's obviously done with or he could "pay me" to take it away and assume the risk that nothing more was wrong.  He reluctantly agreed, with some effort to counter, to 4500 dollars.   ;D  There is a modicum of risk that there could be more but I'm pretty happy with my assessment and I don't think there is.  Insert happy dance here:

The ride home was long and wet.  You can't feel the bars being off cuz it's pretty minor but when you look down, it's obvious.  I could ride it the way it is but now I have concerns about the structural integrity of whatever those things are made of having taken a hit.  I'll be ordering those shortly.

Woot!

Congrats! A local guy has had one for a long time and has way over 100K miles on his. And he takes it all kind of places it was never designed to go to on a regular basis.

My reach to the ground will probably preclude anything stupid but my driveway alone and the couple miles of additional steep gravel road will keep my skills sharp for any light off-roading.  I'm going to research just getting another set of wheels so I can keep a street set available for when you PA guys swing by and wanna go do a jaunt on the WV goodies.  :)

Yes

I think you have saved a motorcycle from a person who probably shouldn't have one. The fact he didn't notice the bars were tweaked says volumes. You will probably find other things as well, but all fixable. Just hope he at least changed the oil regularly.

I love the color and wish you much happiness!

I want to be clear.  If any monkey ever tries to say "I didn't see him".  I want them to get laughed out of court or life or whatever.  If the versys didn't pan out, my next choice was going to be red and white.   ;D

Just pulled those bar holder things off. Integrated long bolts are not the same. Clearly tweaked one or both. Already ordered another set. Here’s hoping that’s all it was. 🙏

One combat commuter ready to go. Sort of. Appt at DMV is on Wed. Spent this morning tightening up the top case mounting bits that we're moving around, getting handles, mirrors and tankbag set up just so. Dude included a bunch of stuff.  He didn't include the appropriate amount of air in the tires tho   In my haste to get on the road, I failed to check tire pressure. Just did and there was 12.5 in the front and 20 in the rear. 🤨. My bad. Thought I'd lost my skills when the bike was fighting me a bit on a ramp. Idiot.  Was so distracted by the handlebars and the impending doom of weather that I got complacent.

I also put a bunch of reflective black tape all over the thing.  Can't hardly see it during the day but hit it with lights at night and it will pop like a ... reflective thing.

He included a Ramball X thing that I will use for my badge to expedite getting through the gates at work.  Handy.

Oh, also played with the ABS around the house in the gravel. That's new. Going down the driveway will be a hoot.

Also put several coats of wax on the metal part of the tank. Sad. Drank it up like a sponge. Better now.  Then I sprayed some spray paint on a board and used the end of a zip tie to dab a micro dot of paint into the little chip on the tank by the seat and took a paper towel and dabbed it into the paint then dabbed it on the little scratches on the side of the top case.  Now they're all at least the same color. Little stuff like that drives me nuts.

Happy.
