Michaux State Forest
« on: May 18, 2020, 10:18:14 AM »
Thinking of taking the camper and quad up to check this place out.  Anyone have any experience?  Apparently there are some nice ATV trails and some primitive camping w/ trailhead access.  Ever been?  Know anything about it?

Don't get excited.  I don't think motorcycles are allowed on the trails.

It's beautiful and huge. Lots of hiking trails.

Worth the trip in my opinion.

Just got a call back.  They STILL don't know if they're gonna be open this weekend.  Apparently PA is weird and is opening different districts at different times and deciding this last minute.  Looks like Mount Ridge ATV park might get our business instead.  Meh.  Hemi won't care.

There are a number of other Forest Districts with ATV trails open.  There are also dual sport and dirt bike trails.

And while your XTs technically aren't allowed in ATV trails, I've seen plenty of dirt bikes on ATV trails and nobody cares.

Since I looked it up, link to map Bald Eagle map page

https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateForests/FindAForest/BaldEagle/Pages/Maps.aspx

I can’t speak to the single track, because I don’t think I had my Wee on that section, but the dual tracks won’t be a challenge for you.  They are fun to rip around on though and it is a beautiful area.

I didn’t know there were maps which is why I looked them up.  I was using my GPS which of course shows you crossing roads where there are none while you are riding in a plain green area trying to figure out how to find the next road to a gas station. LOL.  Enjoy Bill

Cool.  Thanks fellas.  Bald Eagle is about 4 hours away from me.  Would definitely need to make that a camping trip.  Long way to go for 20 miles of trails.

Chris, that map of riding areas is what I was looking for.

Ugh...composed long reply then lost it. Jist:  Too many unknowns to risk on a holiday weekend so we went to Mount Ridge ATV Park instead. Took the camper and met some friends up there. Was great having the camper there but we ended up just going home anyway.

What a spectacular day. It was Hemi's first big ride off the property and with his bitchin new goggles. He did so good.  I was able to carry more speed and hit more obstacles without knocking him around than I thought would be possible. He had a blast. We all had a blast.

That's a serious ATV.  I have an '18 Polaris Sportsman 450 HO (actually a 500cc). Goes as fast as I dare to off-road.  Even two-up I don't think it lacks power and does everything I ask of it.

I have to ask.  Is Hemi your kid or your dog?

We don't have kids. Nuff said.

It's probably a good life our dog has.

It occasionally gets to play but most often it's busy working. It hauls both a small cart as well as our 5x8 landscape trailer w 3500 lb axle. Often full of firewood. Recently I used the winch to pull a pretty good size pine tree down that was caught up in neighboring trees.  It's my little work truck carrying chainsaws, blowers, hand tools etc around the property. It will eventually serve as the mower and the snow plow. It needs to be a stout machine. Happy coincidence that it just happens to be stupid fast. 😁

I don't know if you're aware of these folks or not, but I got good deals on a snowplow and a winch. I ordered a 2500 lb winch, but they were out of stock and sent me a 3500 lb winch at no extra cost.
