How my life has been impacted: MINOR INCONVENIENCE EDITION
« on: March 31, 2020, 10:50:18 AM »
So... since the original 'How my life has been impacted:' thread has taken a dark and serious turn...   Not that it's not warranted, but I believe we need something a tad lighter since I find I'm craving *less* momentous diversions.

I'll start.

Poo and fie on the lockdown of non-essential businesses including the tattoo artist that my wife and I have left deposit with to permanently tag us in honor of my upcoming 50th trip around the sun.

We have B-day celebration vacation plans for mid June that are TOTALLY up in the air right now of course, but prior to that, they wifey and I had planned for our second tattoos each, in time to heal before travel. Our first was a replacement for our wedding bands after 15yrs together. This one was to be a bit more artistic and personal for us both, while also memorializing my 50th.  I designed for her and myself and hopefully they turn out ok when they eventually happen. Intellectually I know this a temporary thing, but we actually planned for the healing time as well and goddamn it, it inconveniences me terribly!!!

Currently on hold until the pandemic allows:

This weekend was the planned annual get together of a bunch of whitewater paddling friends from college.  We've been meeting every year in the Spring since graduating in the late 70s.    We meet in early April because it's the only time there enough water to paddle the smaller creeks in TN, NC, and N. GA.   Four of  us also now have dual sport bikes so we go exploring as well.  I am sure we'll try to reschedule in the Fall assuming this calms down by then, but there will either be a lot of rock scraping in the boats or we'll do more riding than normal.  We're all getting into the high risk age category for this virus so I hope we're all around for the fun.

MINOR INCONVENIENCE EDITION

Working at home, I just don't get to leave "the office" for lunch any more. A quick bop to pick up a sandwich, or go sit at Panera and watch some netflix while having a bowl of soup is a great chance to step away from the job. It's taking real discipline - and ignoring the phone - to get a mid-day break now.

I was unable to buy garlic yesterday.  Sold out at both stores I went to.  I wasn't making a third stop.

Had a couple spring projects I wanted to get done. Put a lean to on the barn to cover my Firewood stash and put some implements outside. That would free up some room to build a dedicated shop inside the barn. As with all projects, it comes down to time and money. I'm usually short on time come spring but have plenty this year. I have the money to do them, but with the current situation I don't want to spend it.

With my wife being home all the time, and not traveling at all, it’s hard for me to lie around the house and take naps during the day.  She actually wants to TALK to me, and HER phone is ringing all the time! Totally screwing with my hermit lifestyle.  I mean I’ve been social distancing for years and then she had to move back in full time!

Berks Jazz Fest was cancelled.  Big disappointment for us, we’ve been going every year since forever.  Had a bunch of tickets for this year.  Anyway....

Wife reads in the newspaper (yeah, the one with ink on the pages that smears all over your fingers and crackles when you turn the pages) that they are going to stream the shows this weekend.

What?  I thought it was cancelled.

Well, they’re streaming the best previously recorded shows.

Oh, you mean like ones we’ve probably seen   I like my Jazz live.

Sounds like a First World Problem

Jazz: Several very talented musicians running scales at the same time.

You probably have to play an instrument and understand music theory to get anything out of it, neither of which describe me.

I get that it's not for everyone.

When the puddytat adopted us, he got exposed to a lot of different music. Initially he was very much a heavy metal puddytat.

The first time he heard Joe Pass play his kind of jazz guitar, he stared at the speaker, turned his ears back, got up, and walked off. Pure 'WTF is this shit?'

Eventually, he realized it had a groove and a swing to it... and he 'got' it. Now he lays on his back... and he's listening. In fact, he likes it more now than some other stuff he liked earlier.

It's definitely a live, in person thing for me. Recorded? Can't do it. But live, the vibe, the energy, the room, has a LOT to do with it.

Was in San Francisco a bunch of years back for a Microsoft developer's conference. Spent a couple evenings walking around town. Kept finding myself in this this little jazzy bluesy place, and in the three nights I was there, they had some VASTLY different acts on the tiny little corner stage; a jazz quartet one night, a blues pair one night, and a ridiculous 50s-era style coffee house poet looking dude doing some acoustic stuff that was poppy and rocky slowed way down, and was freaking awesome. Kinda been in love with San Francisco ever since, and I still catch live jazzy stuff when I'm traveling, when I can.... but I've never done any local jazz. Since that night, I really just equate it with travel night life. Frame of mind, thing.

..., I really just equate it with travel night life. Frame of mind, thing.

It's pretty much the same way with us.  Atlantic City pretty much killed the local scene with a standard contract provision (introduced sometime in the late '90s) that artists can't perform within a 90 mile radius within 3 months of a casino appearance, or so we've been told.

Anyway, we're more likely to hear an artist/music we recognize in Canada or Europe than anywhere around here.
