Quite right. There's a lot of idiots out there. Given the loss of life and long term disability and health problems this causes, together with the sacrifices people have made, I get very angry with them.

There's flare ups everywhere here-North of England, South Wales (partly caused by a single group outing of friends to the North of England), bits of Scotland.

It's shaping up to be a fun winter.

I retired at the end of July-over a year late. The NHS asked me to come back again. I start again next week.

Follow up:  some Green Bay area hospitals are wait-listing patients or transferring them.  https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2020/09/30/wisconsin-hospitals-wait-list-patients-covid-19-surge-coronavirus-green-bay-fox-valley-wausau/3578202001/

This bodes ill for the near future.  Not to be political, but Trump plans a rally in Green Bay this Saturday.  Looks to me like a massive spreading event unless they hold this rally differently than past rallies.

We went through that earlier this year.  The good news is that people in the area will get real serious about mask wearing and social distancing afterwards and rates will drop and probably stay low.  The sad reality is folks in unaffected areas don’t learn from other people’s experience.

Here is a video his wife posted on Facebook today:

The hospitals in Wisconsin are overloaded enough for the field hospital built inside a state fair building to be opened for use:  https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/2020/10/15/milwaukees-state-fair-park-field-hospital-opens-covid-19-patients-what-to-know/3664774001/

My take is that unnecessary riding in Wisconsin should be avoided.  We don't think we're gonna crash, but crashes still happen.  The ERs should still be open.  However, it might be tight if an extended stay is needed.

Going to Sturgis and being up close and personal with all your friends was not smart.  But, there will be lack of scientific data to know just how much the rally contributed to the spread.  There were other factors such as school openings and other such things which would also contribute to the increase in numbers.

In a few years, we may be able to look back and see Sweden may have got it right, for the most part.  Recently, there are material increases in new cases across the U.S., U.K., Spain, France, and other countries (looking at a per-capita basis).

Sheri and I take care of her 80 YO mother, who is at risk for more reasons than just her age. We've been very good by doing grocery pick up, not eating out, not going to Church, etc., and wearing masks when we do go out.  We are both fortunate to have job which accommodate working from home.  So, for the most part, we have been major homebodies since March of this year.  But, we're both getting fatigued with the whole thing.  And, based on the newest data, we're not alone.

Parts of the North of England, Scotland and some counties in Wales are in lockdown again now. There's calls for a 2 week national lockdown, which is sorely needed but we have an idjut government which has seriously mishandled this (wales has done pretty well) and is more interested in popularity.

We're in partial lockdown. Social distancing or wear a mask.
Restaurants, bars, gyms are closed.
Private gatherings are banned.
Public assembly banned but demonstration allowed.
Schools are open.
Shops and shopping malls are open.
Lots of folks work from home, in town traffic is light.
The most important part, unessential travel is frowned upon but riding is OK.  :bigok:

we are seeing several cities in the state looking at partial or total shutdowns due to the rise in cases. Locally no shutdowns, but masks are required in almost all businesses and most businesses are still limiting or banning business travel/meetings.

Well, it had to happen sometime.

Two phone conversations and now COVID has hit my fam twice.  An adult nephew from North Dakota works in healthcare and caught it, and possibly gave it to his wife and child.  And a teen nephew who lives here was exposed and now he and his fam need to quarantine--his mom works in healthcare at an old age facility, so she's not able to work for the time being (his dad can work remotely).

Edit: I was curious about back home, and checked the ND news for hospital bed availability.  As expected, there's a shortage:  https://www.kxnet.com/news/local-news/32-icu-beds-241-non-icu-beds-available-in-nd-as-of-october-13/.  I worked with hospital regulators, and knew we ran thin, and the possibility of an epidemic overwhelming resources was generally understood to be a reasonable assumption.

It’s strange, I now know of over a dozen people who have it or have had it. A couple seriously high risk, old, obese, other health issues.  So far all have recovered completely.  But the odds are catching up I’m sure.

Working in an organisation in the UK's NHS, over 60 of our staff have had it. 6 nurses and 1 pharmacist have died. They were all black African, except for the pharmacist, who was Indian. Age range 32-52, no underlying conditions. White people don't seem to be as at much risk. Having said that, a friend's father died of it-he was white and 62.

My wife (ICU nurse). Thinks there is a blood component.  One of her travel nurse friends worked in New York at their peak and she claimed a majority of the really sick were of a specific blood types or RH factor?   It then in other places it was different.  The majority of the hospital admits here are Native American, so maybe race is a factor?

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2020283

A recent research paper in the New England Journal of Medicine. It confirms other data that people with Blood type A may have an increased probability of an extreme event when infected with SARS-CoV-2 (e.g. acute respiratory attack). People with Blood type O seem to have the least probability. But there are other factors, perhaps many. This paper talks about another locus:

Quote
On chromosome 3p21.31, the peak association signal covered a cluster of six genes (SLC6A20, LZTFL1, CCR9, FYCO1, CXCR6, and XCR1), several of which have functions that are potentially relevant to Covid-19. A causative gene cannot be reliably implicated by the present data. One candidate is SLC6A20, which encodes the sodium–imino acid (proline) transporter 1 (SIT1) and which functionally interacts with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the SARS-CoV-2 cell-surface receptor.28,29 However, the locus also contains genes encoding chemokine receptors, including the CC motif chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9) and the C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 6 (CXCR6), the latter of which regulates the specific location of lung-resident memory CD8 T cells throughout the sustained immune response to airway pathogens, including influenza viruses.30 Flanking genes (e.g., CCR1 and CCR2) also have relevant functions,31 and further studies will be needed to delineate the functional consequences of detected associations.

Sorry for the jargon, but basically this is a 'locus of interest' (much like a 'person of interest' in a criminal investigation).

So I took my newly-bionic sister in law to her physical therapy on Monday.  She gave me a call today, Wednesday, saying that one of her kids was exposed to a COVID house on the prior weekend and now has symptoms.  Hopefully they'll get the test results soon and it'll be good.

It keeps getting closer.  And my wife is a high-risk person.

Thanks.  The kid's exposure happened because she went to a friend's house.  The friend's dad had been exposed at work, and the family should have been isolating because if the dad had it, he had already exposed his whole family, but the dad was the only one isolating.  They didn't tell anyone before the dad started to show symptoms.  If they had been upfront, then my niece wouldn't have been allowed to visit.  You can't count on other people doing the right thing.

So my wife and I are isolating. Hopefully our niece's test results come back soon and she doesn't have it.

We had a minor scare last week.  My grandkids came home one day saying that one of the nextdoor neighbor kids had a COVID test.  This after spending two hours playing outside with the kids younger brother .

Turns out the parents brought him to Doc's because he had a sore throat.  While there; along with a Strep culture, they did a COVID test as well.   Fortunately COVID came back negative and he just had normal kid krud.

And my wife is a high-risk person.

stay safe.

infection rates in my area have doubled in the last week. time for another lockdown but our idiot government won't do it.

Idiots. Really? Just the father isolated?

That's what the sis-in-law told us.  Yep, idiots.  There's a fairly large crew over here who think this is pretend, and thus they have no concern about other people.

Yeah, and all your Wisconsin idiots sent it back down here for our FIB idiots to catch. Or more likely, the FIB idiots went up there to TAB, and that's when they caught it.

No exclusivity on idiots. Canadians have jackasses screaming at kids’ soccer organizers because they’re being asked for contact info in case tracing is required. Then there’s the “let’s have a wedding party and not worry because everyone is fine” crowd. Two weeks later it’s now 44 cases.
And then there’s the Euros. I had always thought that they were pretty smart. Today France will have over 47,000 new cases.

And FYI we have a very close friend who lost his dad to Covid.

What we need more than a vaccine is an effective convalescence therapy.  Just my $0.02

Personally, I'd rather not get infected than have an effective treatment when I do.

Sorry for your friend's loss.

When did we (across the world) let the idiots drive the bus? That can be dated  very precisely.

But vaccination does not ensure you can’t get a disease...it just reduces the odds greatly and hopefully results in a weaker case if you do catch it.  Add in that we have no assurance that a vaccine will last long in the system, and effective treatment is more important.

That's pretty much what my family doctor said.   An effective vaccine will be a huge milestone achievement, but it won't get us all the way there until we develop a treatment for those who still get the disease.  We need both.

We need both a vaccine and effective treatment.  And more people who act responsibly for themselves, their families, and other people.

The vast numbers of people who reject personal responsibility is wearing me down.  Perhaps we need a change in the law so that adult privileges can be revoked for a failure to perform adult responsibilities.  Like a failure to take responsible precautions in a time of pandemic means that a person cannot leave their house without supervision.  Or a failure to take financial responsibility for necessities and one's old age means that a person cannot purchase new toys (this is aimed at a spendthrift bro-in-law).

better yet, why not just get rid of people who don;t think the same way we do?  that'd make the world a much better place don't you think?

I think that's been tried a few times over the years. Typically doesn't end well for either side.
