I always figured that after what Senator Lane and Captain Terrill did, Fletcher figured Josey Wales was gonna kill him.

And Josey woulda killed him for what he done.

I reckon so.

I guess that’s the most logical response I’ve heard.

My thoughts...
Fletcher is Wales’ captain in the Confederate army or at least in their fight against the “red legs” Union pillagers that killed Wales’ wife and kid. Fletcher decides he’s done and is going in to give up and swear allegiance to the USA and convinces his men, minus Wales, to go in with him. He tells the senator that he’s done with his money and just wants to be left in peace. Senator’s men shoot all of Fletcher’s men and draw guns on Fletcher. Wales rides in and kills a bunch of the blue bellies and rides off with the kid who is shot. Kid tells Wales that Fletcher was in on it.

Fletcher tells senator “because of what you did here today I’ve got to hound that man” (Wales). Senator gives Fletcher a commission to hunt Wales.

Don’t get it. Why would Fletcher care if Wales shot a bunch of traitorous blue bellies who betrayed Fletcher’s trust? He and Wales fought together for years and liked each other. Senator and red legs kill his men and suddenly it’s Wales’ fault? Makes zero sense.

I need to watch that again.  It's been a couple years.

Didn't Fletcher kill Josies' wife and kid then burn his house down?

It is a great movie. I wonder if it is on netflicks.

Wales got away and knew what happened? Fletcher knew he couldn't leave any loose ends and/or thought Wales would eventually come after him? Just my thoughts/guesses.

I guess I'm their target audience. I never considered those complexities.

Fletcher had to go after Wales because the kid told Wales Fletcher was in on the double-cross, and because Fletchers men were supposed to stand down. After being betrayed Wales would (theoretically ) keep up the fighting.

The bigger question is why Wales went for that vapid idiot Laura Lee. I'd have been hitting on Little Moonlight like the fist of an angry God myself.

She is way better looking than Grannie. Although, Grannie has some experience on her side.

It's the same reason he went for her in Gauntlet, Every Which But Loose, Bronco Billy, Any Which Way You Can, and Sudden Impact.

As for WHY the good/bad guys go after either/or/both, as many times as I've watched OJW, it never crossed my mind.

Exactly. 1 was a choice by the casting exec. 2 was because they were a couple.
