You're on the cost side of the balance sheet.  Deal with it or change jobs.

The only award I ever wanted was that the paycheck clears on payday.

this ^
why is it the gen Y (whine) or whatever they are called now have to be patted on the back all the time? you did your job, I paid you, we're even, right? My operations supt. has the best take on it:  "I told the guys yesterday, ya know, if I get fired today I can leave happy knowing I probably got paid more than I should have for a lot of years"  I think he has a point.
the above are merely the ramblings of a hamfisted fuckwit who has broken too many helmets.

Our COO wants a smaller office so that he can show that even the big wigs suffer in these tough economic times.

He's chosen my office.

Sadly impossible. Two walls are cement block, the other two are these crappy drywall dividers.

Oooh, I could put it up in the ceiling tiles, though.

Yeah, it's not so simple.

We're basically having to clear out one of our buildings that houses a large portion of our IT staff (my group are the red-headed step children that are kept in a cave by the DC) so a lot of renovation has to occur at our main office. Our COO will ultimately move to where our Benefits department is currently housed. In order to move our Benefits department from where they are, they have to move in to where they are going...which is where the COO currently has an office. So I get to sit in a cube with my crew for a few months while I wait for my new managerial type office to be vacated.

We don't have light switches. All of our lights run on motion sensors. I've covered the sensor in my office and enjoy the wamr ambiance of my multiple monitors and my lava lamp.

Just an observation -- when my then-employer switched from offices for managers to everybody in cubes, I learned more in two weeks about wwhat REALLY goes on where the rubber meets the road than I had in a couple of years in an office . . . . performance reviews were retooled . . . .

Upsides and downsides to everything.
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Back in the 80's, 3Com's number forced you to listen to silence. And every minute or so, it would pop up with, "all techs are assisting other customers, press 1 if you'd like to continue to hold" and if you didn't press 1, it disconnected you.

Leading a group ride.  I did it snowmobiling last weekend.  One guy was all "Let's get 'em unloaded and go riding" as soon as we got to the cabin- not time for a pre-ride pointer discussion.

I should have just stopped and waited till everyone came back and listened, but whatever.

Needless to say about 15 miles down the trail along some power lines I went off the trail following tracks through powder and came to a big hill with a stiff drop-off.  Of course since I couldn't see the other side, I slowed to look, then went safely (and slowly) over.  Two guys did the same thing, then the next 5 proceeded to hit it full speed in the dark and smack their faces (helmets and all) against their windshields.  One pretty good cut, two bruises (visors open), and two guys knocked to crap as they flew over.

This resulted in a 20 minute stop in our riding (instead of a 3 minute conversation at the start) while people assessed injuries and I explained a few riding rules- (namely don't go where you can't see, ride your own ride, and watch for the guy behind you).  Of course you come off like a dick explaining some pointers AFTER injury occurred.   :baldy:

I love my friends, but sometimes a couple of them can piss me off a little.  Someone has to go first, and once again I was reminded why it sucks being that guy in a big group (we had 10 riders).  This is why I gave up group rides in the summer and stick to my three other core guys with whom we have ridden for 10 years or so.

Such a common occurance . . . . there are riders (none on this board) that I simply won't ride with any more . . . my time is too valuable . . . . .

Not a safe thing to do in downtown Ojai, CA. First it's a two-lane road, one lane in each direction and it's congested on a weekday afternoon. Secondly, you don't know what gramps is going to do - he may not bother to signal that he is going to turn left. Third, many drivers roll a stop sign from the side streets. Fourth, pedestrians step off the curve into traffic like they are suddenly going to be covered with a force field.

If this happened further on down the road you can bet gramps would get passed right properly.... at the first safe opportunity.

OMG the group ride thing.  I used to think that I had a problem because I hated leading Women on Wheels group rides and then I realized that, no, leading group rides just plain SUCKS (and, frankly, leading WOW rides sucks extra hard).

Want to read something absolutely terrifying?  This is from an email to our WOW mailing list and pretty much explains why I stopped riding with them.  This, btw, was from the ride leader.

Quote
At lunch, as people were exchanging reading glasses, I commented I am near-sighted and I didn't need glasses to read menus.  Which means:

Wearing my glasses for driving/riding PREVENTS me from seeing the odometer and speedometer.  (Unless I open the visor, and lift up my glasses.  As I do - on occasion.)

I borrowed a bike for the ride.

On my car and bike: 60 mph is "top dead center".  That's cruising speed. Manufacturers make it EASY to read "average" speed.

Unless your car was made under President Carter, when they reset "top dead center" to 55 mph, or "Double Nickels".

When I hit about 2 o'clock position on the speedometer, I thought I was doing 75mph.  Peppy little Honda.  I backed my speed down.  Slowing perhaps to 65 mph?

AFTER LUNCH, looking at the gauges without my glasses and saw:

Gee whiz !!! -- the Rebel has 45 mph at the top of the dial.

Not 60 mph.

Not even 55.

My freeway speed south "might"  have been 55 or 60 mph.  OOPS ?

How in the everloving fuck do you not notice that you're going 55mph on the interstate?

I just checked....my speedometer is 110mph at "top dead center"

Perhaps I can use her explanation at my next roadside chat with the revenuers.

I don't do group rides anymore either because most of the guys in my area are undergrads or recent grads and want to meet and then go ride to a bar.  :-\  I'm the only one that had a tire plug kit or even the stock tool kit.  You might have AAA, but I'm not waiting three hours with an unprepared idiot so they can get picked up by a tow truck for a flat that could have been fixed in 15 minutes.  Maybe I need to try the local ADVrider meetup.  They have to be older and not dumb enough to remove the stock tool kit to "save weight" when they are packing an extra 20lbs around the waist.  :o

How in the everloving fuck do you not notice that you're going 55mph on the interstate?

:o  I would think one could tell the difference between 45 and highway speed with their eyes closed much less, looking at a speedo.  :rolf:  On group rides I am usually the anchorman, I have seen some crazy shitake and helped pickup a lot of broken plastic.

I also have a pretty low opinion of group rides. I've been on some that were just flat out dangerous.

But I'll add this exception: Group rides I've been on that were organized by folks I met on the S-T.x's, on both coasts, have all been good experiences. People ride well and understand the ride-your-own-ride concept.

People at the fitness center who 'hog' exercise equipment as in "I'll do three reps then just sit here and stare off into space like a cow chewing my cud; or pull my smartphone out and read/type messages; or have an extended conversation with my friend who's just standing around.  And then I won't wipe the machine off."

That's it.  Ride your own ride.  Just know where to meet at the end of the day.

People, especially non-riders, who think it's okay to put their screaming snot-nosed brat on your bike to pose for some stupid Facebook picture while you're inside eating lunch.

"Hey, do you mind if I just hop up onto the hood of your fucking Nissan for a quick nap?"

People who insist on driving in the fast/passing lane on a busy interstate while driving at or 10 mph below the speed limit, then hane the gall to look shocked  when they're tailgated, honked at, flipped off, ect. by drivers who have to go around them in the slow lane while dodging all the semis as well.

Why can't these idiots pull over and let people by?

BTW: I did not flip them off or tailgate, but I did flash my lights and honk to no avail.

When asshats at work park their Canam Spyders in the motorcycle parking and take up all the space where normally 6 MOTORCYCLES can park.

FIB!

(though, you're totally right.  I lived in WI for 22 years and the left lane road boulders and tailgating is insane)
