Fecking standardized testing.  I just ended week two of administering these stupid things.  Teach-run to computer lab-teach-run to computer lab-eat lunch in lab while administering-run back to teach.  No breaks cept to drain the bladder, no preps.  Three.  Freaking.  Weeks.

Yes America, we are really doing our students good by making them jump through fecking hoops.  Let's make them all gerbils of the same thinking.  That will help us out.

One week to go.  At least I have Monday off to spend some long weekend time with my dear wife.   :naughty:

I dislike people who post cute pics of their kids, making me feel like I've missed out on happiness.

Then I read threads about messy divorces and problem children and feel better about my life choices.

Your dev has full root access??  :wow: :flush:

Oh god.   I hate to admit that I understood every word of that one and, as a project manager in a past life (including using Agile/iterative).....woooo boy.  I'm just gonna pour you a drink from here.

It's not just that. There are no user accounts on about half the dev/qa systems. So they log in as a service account (oracle, mysql, netadmin, labadmin, dbadmin, devadmin, whathaveyou). So I don't know who owns the system. Who to call if we need to do something.
...

Coming at it from the dev side, I'm not going to negate the need for proper security. But there has to be some reasonable middle ground. For instance, if I need to set up an ODBC connection on my dev machine, I sure as heck shouldn't need a *@$)*&ING help desk ticket for someone to do it remotely...

OK, so that I'm not kicked off this thread, here's an actual rant.

We had COBRA health insurance after I left Apple in 2012.  It was due to expire in February 2014 since you can only have it for 18 months. OK, fine.

In February 2014, I get my (expected) termination packet and am surprised to learn that they had actually cancelled our policy on December 31, 2013 for non-payment.  Say WHAT?

A bit of digging showed that our autopay had failed for January 2014 and neither COBRA nor my bank thought it necessary to mention this.

Normally I would say, "well, whatever," and pay out of pocket for claims filed in January.  But, hey! Our son was born in January.  That's like 100K US DOLLARS without insurance.

And then COBRA rejected my appeals letter because they said they sent me payment coupons and envelopes in August 2012 and if I can't be arsed to use the coupons and instead want to use this new-fangled crazypants technology called T3h Intardnetz!1! then they can't be responsible for terminating our coverage.

I personally think that it's an absolute horseshit sandwich that they couldn't have contacted me in January to tell me that the autopay didn't go through.  But, as my insurance broker (THANK GOD FOR HER OH SWEET SHITSNACKS) told me, the companies are out to screw you, so they don't really care if you don't pay.

It hasn't reached full on "rant" status.....yet....

But...the kid behind our house is a big-time RC guy....planes, helicopters, cars...etc. Now his latest toy is actually pretty cool. It's a 5 bladed drone platform. I've watched him practice take-offs and landings in his backyard over the fence....it's kind of hard NOT to notice it... :). But now, we've been seeing it hover over our house, our neighbor's house, and out over our street....with a camera.  >:(

Our neighbor has taken photos of it hovering over their backyard and when it occurs, the drone suddenly veers back to the owner's place and lands in his backyard. Our guess is that he saw them taking the pics via the video feed.

It's now reached the point where the next time we see this thing over our property or out over our street, his parents are getting a visit. Or at the very least, the cops are getting a call. He seems to do this only when he's home alone..or so it seems.

I dig RC toys. I really do. Hell, sometimes an RC plane is more fun to fly than the real thing. But this kid is being flat out stupid. You don't fly these things over people's homes. And you certainly don't fly one with a camera over someone's backyard.

Especially if that person has a 12 gauge shotgun and a full magazine of 00 buckshot.  :firedevil:

Nahhhh....just joking...wouldn't shoot it. Maybe...

He might honestly not see the social implications of the camera.  I'd talk with his parents (or him directly) sooner rather than later so that you can have a non-emotional conversation about it.  Out here in Silicon Valley, there are a lot of people with Parrot drones (Peter has at least 2), helicopters, and the like and the vast majority of them have built-in cameras.  It's just A Thing, like phones have cameras now.  I'd be surprised if the kid is intentionally spying on you (or anyone), so just saying, "hey, please don't fly over our backyard" will probably have the result you want.

Is this what the world has come to? I go to the drug store to get some Nyquil and I get asked for personal information to make the purchase? What, do I look like a 53 year old smurf? Like one packet of pseudoephedrine would have any sort of yield. Do I look like the kind of guy who would do anything less than a proper P2P cook?   >:(

Yup, and you are limited in how much you can get so if you buy a pack of the short acting at Sam's club and then decide you'd prefer time release because taking pills every 4 hours is a PITA you are screwed and have to wait until the next calendar month to get them.  >:(

What I want is for Dev and QA to match the configuration of the Production environment so you, as a Dev, experience the problem first. My team of five manage 1,200 unix systems and don't have time to fix things because you want things set up for your benefit.

Carl

Wait... you want the environments to be as close to "the same" as is reasonable...? That's a concept, right there.

I can't tell you how often in my dev career I've released something to production after weeks and months of testing and tweaking only to have it completely not work at all, or crash horribly in a great ball of fire because of environmental differences.

You want parts or help for your appliance. But you don't even know the brand?

Here, have some $40 spark plugs for a BMW. Have a good day.

Fuck it. It sits in the corner. If it dies, we won't know until someone tells us.

Carl

Agreed. Shitty "admins", whether real or just trying to hoke their way through it, can make EVERYONE miserable. :(

I get to hear, all too often, "Dude, it's your box" or "Dude, it's your code" when shit goes wonky or things don't run in prod/qa like they do in dev.

Ok, if it's my code, show me.... Please. Let's dig into my shitty code and you show me where *I* screwed it up. Please. This should be entertaining.

Ok, if it's my box, give me the admin credentials and I'll fix it myself (and yes, I'm qualified). Then, please explain why you still have a job. Because, trust me on this, your boss and I will be discussing it.

Otherwise, STFU with the finger pointing, and make A look like B. I can't prevent, in code, a missing satellite lib or missing resource crash.
