OK, so that I'm not kicked off this thread, here's an actual rant.
We had COBRA health insurance after I left Apple in 2012. It was due to expire in February 2014 since you can only have it for 18 months. OK, fine.
In February 2014, I get my (expected) termination packet and am surprised to learn that they had actually cancelled our policy on December 31, 2013 for non-payment. Say WHAT?
A bit of digging showed that our autopay had failed for January 2014 and neither COBRA nor my bank thought it necessary to mention this.
Normally I would say, "well, whatever," and pay out of pocket for claims filed in January. But, hey! Our son was born in January. That's like 100K US DOLLARS without insurance.
And then COBRA rejected my appeals letter because they said they sent me payment coupons and envelopes in August 2012 and if I can't be arsed to use the coupons and instead want to use this new-fangled crazypants technology called T3h Intardnetz!1! then they can't be responsible for terminating our coverage.
I personally think that it's an absolute horseshit sandwich that they couldn't have contacted me in January to tell me that the autopay didn't go through. But, as my insurance broker (THANK GOD FOR HER OH SWEET SHITSNACKS) told me, the companies are out to screw you, so they don't really care if you don't pay.
