Is there a good, free photo batch resizer?
« on: January 29, 2019, 09:33:39 PM »
I need to batch resize a couple dozen images for a newsletter every month. I've been doing it manually via Paint (I know, I know) because I know how it works and I like how it lets you put a max pixel width or height and it will automatically input the other dimension. I would like to resize so the max width or height (depending on orientation) is 800 pixels. Most of the work of building the newsletter is saving/renaming/resizing/imbedding photos so if there's an easy batch resizer LMK.

Do you use the Windows OS?

The PowerTools ImageResizer has been recreated for current WinOS versions:

You can download ImageMagick.

On my mac I use Sips. Comes with it.

ImageMagick is the platform-agnostic standard.

I use Light Image Resizer It does much more than just resize pics. I use it mostly to resize and add watermarks to the pics I post. Works on Windows only.
You can use it for free if you don't mind the nag. IIRC the free version is limited to a certain number of files at a time and the count down increases with uses.
I got the paid version. ($20USD) You get unlimited upgrades.

Send them my way. I'll resize them for you and send them back.

I picked up this freeware photo resizer a while back because every time I needed to take pics of shipping damage or quality issues, I couldn't email them at 5mb per image. Works like a charm, super light and free as the day is long.

Batch sizer/renamer. Only trick is remembering to use advanced options to give it direction (since it doesn't default to any change).

Did I mention free? No nags, limits or request for donations either.

Great googly-moogly!

sips --resampleWidth [new pixel width] [filename]
or
sips --resampleHeight [new pixel height] [filename]

Using either of these maintains the pic's aspect ratio. setting both, you can morph it, but you know... stuff gets wonky.

You can also crop, crop-and-resize, etc. Most of what you can do with ImageMagick (maybe all...?) can be done with sips. I think it can do basic type conversion, too. I use it all the time for creating the _1x, _2x, and _3x image files used in XCode for retina and iPad displays.
