First on the list was the Big Horn National Forest.. Here is my perspective.

Wasn't that great?

LOL

The speed was a factor where I could not really keep up and take pictures.  So I started the whole "keep the camera in the open tankbag and shoot from the speeding motorcycle" method of shooting. Here is my perspective.

Now the next few pics were when I stopped the bike a couple of times to take pics knowing I had promised a ride report and also to see a very high bridge where we practiced throwing coins off and watched the Coriolis effect (i think) cause the pennies to spin and take off in another direction.... Pretty cool.

We would get to red lodge shortly after this picture.

We spent the night partying till late.  Beers were flowing.  Laughs were plentiful.  Whore hounds were everywhere and even some tic tacs. I could post some pics but they wouldn't make sense to anyone here except Gregg and Mike and that's all I'm going to say about that.....  lolololol. I had already told Gregg with that amount of drinking and the previous week's hours of riding that I would need a day off.  So they rode the next day while I did some catching up with phone calls, laundry, getting in the hotel pool and basically relaxing getting ready for going over the pass the next day to get to Yellowstone National Park and The Tetons.

Not wanting to party much at all, I called it an early night, called my wife, and got mentally prepared for the next few days of camping and navigating through Wyoming to Flaming Gorge.. All new areas that I really did not research much.  I had seen some squiggly lines down at the bottom of Wyoming and thought it would be a cool place to camp...... cause freecampsites.net said so.

So we were off the next morning.  I said my goodbyes to the crew.  All packed, Gregg and I were set to go back over the pass to get to cook city. Here are the pics

Coming around a blind corner I was presented with a mini van whose nose was on the white line of my lane and perpendicular with the flow.  He was turning his car around on a double yellow.  It was so sweet of him.  I brought the bike back up and braked.  In a millisecond after going around him and almost giving him the finger I noticed this in my lane.

I slowed down to a full stop.  Kept the engine running.  He kept coming.  Right towards me.  I was looking for an escape route as if.  I noticed a trail to the right of me.. I was hopeful that the beast would make that left turn and all would be well in the world and I would live to see another day. Gregg came to my right and I asked, "What do I do"  He said, "Keep your engine on"  I said "It is"

He just kept coming until he made a right at my front tire. I had to lean back to get him in my frame.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

We looked at each other as he slowly moved to my left. My heart was pounding but strange I felt at absolute peace.

The car in front of me on the opposing lane gave me the WHHEEEWWW sign across his brow.  I just shook my head and moved on.  Incredible experience.

This was exactly one day before the ASSHAT hit the news of screwing with one of these beasts and it went viral.  He was later arrested for being a douchebag..

That evening we were to camp for free at a guys property on a river.  I found his spot on ADV tent space.  It is a great resource.  Our property is listed on there. So if you are ever in south jersey and want to throw a tent down, come on over.
This guy met us in Jackson.  He had property right in town.  He greeted us at the property and showed us where to throw our tents down.  Gregg was first to get his tent up.  I was struggling with a broken pair of flip flops.  My feet stunk so bad that they disintegrated the wide cotton strap that holds the flip on.  LOL

I slept well.  Gregg was up early.  He was packed up when I fell out of the tent.  We got a move on.  We had a big day to get to the top of Utah and were going to camp again that night.  Here is what we saw.  Including a big brown bear on the side of the road, which I did not get a picture of.
Here we go.  Are you ready?

Overwhelmed with the beauty of the changed landscape it was time to scout out a campsite.  Coming down the gorge we were treated to more beauty and the sinewy ribbon of asphalt that a fellow rider that we met compared it to the BEAR TOOTH PASS.  Agreed.

139 dumped us in the desert north of Grand Junction.  They were doing construction at the end of 139 in the desert.  They said we would have a 5 minute wait.  I checked the bike for ambient temperature.  It showed 104.  It was hot and I was ready to get to the hotel that I had booked the night before while we ate in town before returning to camp. When we got to the Mesa Inn in Grand Junction, went to dinner, and Gregg fell asleep at 7:30.  I walked across the street to a wine bar and went upstairs on the upper deck and checked out the passing storm over the golf course down below

I noticed that Gregg's rear tire looked like it would not survive another 4 days for him to get home.  He agreed.  We checked out the local BMW/KTM/Harley Davidson shop in town and we were in luck.  They had a direct replacement for his bike.  They would take us the next morning.  Gregg booked another night for us in the same room.  I told him that we should go up to Grand Mesa and scrub off the remainder of the tread...  The biggest flat top mountain in the USA located right outside of Grand Junction.

The plan was that Gregg would get up early and get the tires put on.  I would spend that time researching free camping spots near Bryce and Jacob Lake for when I was solo again in a few days..

He got back, we packed up and got ready to head down 141 to Naturita at the request of someone on this thread.  141 was a route that I had intended to get to 10 years ago on my first xc trip.  This time I was determined to get 'er done.  I had no idea what to expect, just that it was supposed to be epic.  It lived up to the hype.  Here is the proof of that statement.

The plan was to make it to the top of the plateau outside of MOAB and the entrance to Dead Horse Point/Canyonlands National Park.  We got into Moab and stopped to get much needed water, and nutrition to take on top of the plateau for camping.  When we got into Moab it was 107 and we needed a break.  We sat under the only shade at the gas station while we made some phone calls to catch our families up on our adventures.  There was a water line there so I drenched my space suit with water and we got back on the horses and headed to Canyonlands. Here is proof.

This is the storm that would torture us later that night.  Cloud to ground lightning with high winds but minimal rain caused me not to get to sleep.  I finally fell asleep at about 4:00am and woke up at 7:00am.  This would be a huge factor on me later that morning.

We packed our shit up and headed down the plateau looking for gas and water for the day.  By the time we got down to 191 I could tell we wouldn't have long before the heat would be an issue.  The plan today was to show Gregg Arches National Park.  We got to the gas station and I went in to fill my pack up with ice and get a coffee.  I got a diet pepsi instead.  We caught up with family about our plans and then headed to

Within a short time of looking at the wonderment I started to become sick to my stomach and shaky.  I took off my riding boots and put on my hikers.  I could feel myself getting worse by the minute.  I thought I was going to puke in my helmet.  That meant either I was getting sick from all of the water I was drinking on an empty stomach or I was showing signs of heat exhaustion.  Either way the views were incredible. Here they are

We headed back down to the visitor's center to get my stamp.  It was hot and I informed Gregg how I was feeling.  We went inside and cooled off, I got my stamp.  They had water stations outside the center which is great, but because I was feeling so ill, when I drank it, it had that iodine taste which just made things worse.  I looked at the map and decided that we should probably eat something.  It was close to 11:00am and so we headed north west up to Green River. When I turned my bike on this is what the temp read

Fast! So we could get to Green River to eat something:

We got of the highway and traveled through the city that is Green River.  To me, cause I was feeling like total shit, it felt like another drug infested, run down, was a thriving community at one time, shit hole town.  These cities whose only source of revenue is at the highway entrance and exit at either end of town is quite depressing to see.  Very sad but very intriguing to me how this happens.  At what time did things start to go down hill for so many towns.  Was it in the 70's with gas being outrageous?  Was it 2008 housing crash?  Was it the last 10 years of opioids being pushed by big pharma?  Sad but intriguing.

We ate at a subway. I ordered a tuna foot long and even got chips and mineral water to replenish.  Within eating half of my sandwich and sitting in the cool I was beginning to feel better. Gregg could chyme in here and talk about how he was feeling at that time, but he told me he was gong to head back and try and get to maybe Grand junction or farther and then get home by next day or two.  It was time to say goodbye to a friend that I wasn't sure I would ever see again.  We went outside in that damn heat again and both broke up a bit. With a hearty hand shake/hug we said our goodbyes and promised to tell each other were we ended up that night.

The plan was to get through the dessert that is Route 24 to get to Capitol Reef.  I knew it would be hot.  I took my hydration pack and poured it over my head and body.  Drenched I walked back into the subway and filled up my pack to the rim with ice and water.  When I got back outside Gregg was gone and I was alone again..

It was hot and windy, I felt ok, but like Chris said, Green River just didn't look like a place to hang out, it was a tough decision to end my trip early and head back to SD, but I headed the GSA in the opposite direction from Chris set the cruise at 85 and headed home, I got to Rapid City about 5:00 the next day, I have to admit, it was nice to be home, 3,000 miles without any issues is always a great feeling! Chris, you are doing a great job detailing everything!

I was hot.  Like, anxious hot.  I needed to get off the bike.  I was pushing to get to Capitol Reef.  The scenery was changing.  I was getting close.  Though my surroundings were beautiful, I wanted to enjoy, but I couldn't stop fantasizing about taking a cold shower and getting in some ice cold air conditioning. I stopped at a Rodeway Inn on the east side of Capitol Reef and parked under a tree.  I breifly spoke to someone leaving the hotel.  He told me that he just cancelled his reservation and that they have at least one open room.  I just felt like I wanted something more.  Something that did not give off the crack/meth/destitute look. With minimal service on the idiot phone I found a hotel, called and booked it.  $80.00 a night.  The pictures looked inviting. Now that was my mission.  To get there and relax.  Here is my mission in pictures:

While going through Fruita on 24 west, I noticed the sign for Goosenecks.  Another spot that was on my 'to do' list.  I had missed the chance ten years ago to see the goosenecks and have seen many pics.  So the next morning, free of the top box, I set off to visit one of my favorite National Parks.  Capitol Reef.

Fresh rain on the road to cool things off.... What a delight.

While I was at the Goosenecks, I met a young couple who had just finished doing the whole Appalachian Trail the year before.  It took them 5.5 months and they were traveling out west to check things out.  They would be heading towards Bryce Canyon like me.  I told them of the free campsites there and where to get off right before the sign for Bryce.

Back to the hotel I got much needed coffee, called my mom, and at about 11:30 I took off to Route 12. Goodbye hotel

So the following pics are from the world famous Route 12.  If you have never ridden this wonderful road you will never forget it once you do.

I tried so hard to find the hogs back bridge.  Went down the road off of route 12 and found myself entering a private ranch.  I turned around and continued on, 'cause well.... Route 12..... yeah.
NO PICTURES CAN DO THIS PLACE JUSTICE.  Alpine to desert rock infused goodness.... Oh and newly paved in the rock section. The last time I was here it was tar snake hell.  This time ribbon heaven.  Enjoy.

On the way to Bryce down rt 12, I stopped in Escalante, UT.  10 years ago I got a ticket in this town.  I saw a couple of yamaha sport bikes at a restaurant and pulled in.  I started talking to the two guys and one girl.  They had come from Salt Lake City and came down to hang near route 12 to ride it a few dozen times.  They all participate in track days.  So I offered to buy them a round of beers.  I got a tuna sandwich and a local IPA.  We talked for about an hour at the table.  All the while we saw a local cop pull over four cars in that short time.  Wheew the money they must make for the entrapment.  Disgusting.

Back on the bike I head back toward Bryce.  I stopped in Tropic UT to check out where my family and I rented a "tiny house" for a night.. Because there wasn't any service I got back on route to Bryce.  The skies turned black and in no time at all I was in a full hail storm and took cover under a restaurant
awning and went inside to dry off and charge my phone with my solar charger.  I have video of the storm.  NOt as bad as the one in SD but a good one all the same.

I set up my site and called my wife.  I couldn't believe I was a mile into the woods and was getting service.. With that an SUV pulls up and stops in front of where I was camping. I looked up and the couple I had seen earlier that day were just staring at me with a big smile.

While still on the phone with my wife I screamed out "Holy Shit! No way!!!"  So we started talking for a brief moment and then they went to set up their campsite down the road with their little dog.

Got some sleep and began counting down the days till I see my family.  3 more days....

These guys kept me company while I broke down the tent and packed up....
