Tell me about Lynchburg, VA

My wife is considering a job there.  What's the town like?  How is the riding?  What else should I know about the area?

Riding around the area is excellent.  I'm less than a couple hours south.  The town is okay, Roanoke is way better and Charlottesville is better yet.

Well, it's in Virginia, so every speeding violation over 1mph over the speed limit is $400 and a 6 month suspension of your license, if they don't just shoot you on sight.

No comment on Bubbles review of the Old Dominion but I've been riding here for 35 years and it's a great area, so I strongly disagree. Doug's remark is spot on and that 81 corridor is nothing but universities all along it. But, cost of living is quite a bit less in Lynchburg compared to Roanoke & Charlottesville with regards to housing. I'm 2 hours away from Lynchburg and if you guys want to do a preview and use my log home as a pit-stop, ask away. Welcome to ride or drive whatever I have in the garage as well.

As far as the cost of living, a little bit of searching on some realty sites less me to believe that I could buy an antebellum mansion there for roughly the same cost as a cardboard box down by the river here in SoCal...

It's very near the BRP, not far from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP, and about 3 hours from some of the best off road riding I know of.

I really like the area and its proximity to the BRP.  Not too far to mountains west of the BRP.  Close to the D-Day Memorial, Roanoke and many other nice areas.  Close to Smith Mountain Lake and as you said, very affordable.

I just popped in and saw this. Its late, but what the heck?

Lynchburg is marvellous for riding and stuff. Not close to major cities for metropolitan amenities, but there's Charlottesville to the north,  Richmond to the northeast, and Roanoke to the southwest. We moved to the area from Baltimore three years ago and LOVE IT!

Lots of local roads have those "GPS routing not recommended for trucks" signs. We're 30 min from the BRP and regularly do an afternoon twisty road loop after work or on a lazy weekend afternoon.

The Cedar Fire (which until this last one in Santa Barbara was the biggest fire in CA history*)came close enough to our house back in 2004 that I spent a few hours up on the roof watering everything down with the hose, hearing flying embers land in the pool in the back yard...
















*According to some measures.  There was a bigger fire in the northeast corner of the state a few years ago but a lot of the fire area was in Nevada, so they only count the CA part on the top ten list.  Also, an enormous fire in Orange county happened a century ago, burning approximately 330,000 ares compared to the 274,000 of the Cedar fire and 277,000 of the recent one.  However, it happened before the current fire measuring system was developed and therefore doesn't count.
