Any VPN recommendations?
« on: September 01, 2017, 07:20:28 AM »
Anyone have a VPN that they recommend? Primarily for privacy, so don't really need TOR. Mostly looking for something that does not slow my connection to much

I started with Cloak on my Mac Air and love it. They didn't have an Android version so I used Tunnelbear on my phone. And ran into that slow connection issue.

Fortunately,  Cloak (now Encrypt.me) now has an Android version. One account, two different devices, seamless, easy to use......happiness.

is this something I should want to have on my systems as well?  Why?
I use a VPN for confidential work stuff - but why the need for security at home?

Not at home - public WiFi mostly. You tell the software that your home network is secure but when it detects an unsecure network, the VPN is established.

Which is why getting it running on my phone was a priority to me. It's hooking up to public wi-fi all the time and a lot of the traffic on my phone is private work related stuff. On my laptop, like DNA, I've just used the work VPN for work stuff. But I'm thinking about another option there for traveling and coffee shop writing jags.

I've read articles that recommend VPN for home PC browsing too.  To keep your browsing (that can reveal a whole lot about you) from your internet or browser provider.

I'm close to installing Opera, which has a VPN.

Have fun with the choosing. :) On my laptop, I generally SSH tunnel via a SOCKS proxy back to home.

+1 on Opera and Opera vpn on Android

I was just checking this out with great interest.  You do realize that Opera was sold to a Chinese consortium a while back?  That absolutely kills the whole deal for me.  Sadly, because Opera was a nice browser I used to use regularly.  I think I’m going to test viffergyrl’s recommendation of encrypt.me on their 14 day free trial.  Right after i go get a new cable modem/wifi router.  My Netgear c3700 has gone flaky on me, dropping connection too regularly with Comcast.

I always show friends this who are just becoming interested in security.  It's from the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and tests your browser using fingerprinting technology.

https://panopticlick.eff.org/

Basically, your configuration of what is visible through the browser is likely unique enough to identify you.

While your their, download and install Privacy Badger and HTTPS Everywhere.

Tried encrypt.me.  For basics, it's ok, but not truly secure for what I want.  Purchased NordVPN access.  Special deal for Cyber Monday - 3 years for $99.  How could I pass that up for one of the top rated companies?

 :(

I'm now looking at other options. I have Kaspersky AV and not sure I want to use their vpn. I would get 300Mb free per day.
It looks like I will go with one of the pay options like NordVPN.

I can't validate any of their claims but the discussion about the need for no logs is valid.

Shoot.  It's been too long playing with IPsec settings.  I'm trying to configure my cable modem/wifi router for IPsec tunneling with NordVPN and my mind is going blank with all the various address and subnet settings.  Their FAQ doesn't cover what I need, which is a refresher course on basic networking.

I fixed the autoconnect VPN thingie.  I bought a DD-WRT equipped wifi router this week and set it up instead of using the wifi off the cable modem.  Ran the install script provided by NordVPN and it's configured to start automatically and covers everything on the house network now.  Snappy performance returns.
