Cleveland Moto did a podcast on the subject, I think it may have been 180, or it might have been a segment in an earlier one, where people bring in a free motorcycle, and what it costs to revive it.

I would love a project like that.
You never see a motorcycle parked outside a psychiatrists' office.

I know my brother had an estimate from a reputable bmw shop at the time and it was around 4 grand. I can't pull that off.

There's your problem. 'reputable'. No reputable shop wants the kind of time investment that a restoration like that entails. Pad that estimate to scare away that kind of business. (or get it at inflated $$$).

Not that they may not have been spot on, but most shops shy away from open heart surgery when they can remove 25 ingrown toenails for the same time investment and a higher ROR. To go with a medical analogy.
