Hopefully the weather will clear up for you as you head east.    Stay safe and have fun.     It is great that you are picking up and delivering this scoot for a friend in need.

And welcome to Louisiana !     1:59 CST    You are making good progress.

I'm going to stop in Scott, LA and call it a day. I've been going hard since 2:30 this morning. About another 32 miles to go for the day. If I have the energy I'll do a proper write up for the day.

Okay, here's the quick down and dirty of the day.

I was worried about hooking up my nav so I ordered a RAM ball mirror stem mount, Amazon didn't get it to me in time. Boooo! So this is what I have to work with and the Burger's handlebar is cladded.

I'm up at 2:30 am and out the door to the airport at 3 am and on the plane at 5:30 am. I got hit with a check in fee for one of my bags for $30 as this time they wouldn't let me wear it as a hat. lol

Gas, quick mart and casino in LA. Swing!

Get to Houston and catch a cab to the dealership, as you can see it's pouring and very foggy out. Yay!

By the time I get to the dealership the rain had let off a tad. Man, what nice dealership!

I hustle up into the dressing room and don the rain gear hand head out to look the scoot over. The salesman was taking in the back to fill it with gas. Nice!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I brought a thick strip of rubber and wrapped it around the mirror stem and used the handlebar clamp. It worked like a champ!

Once I got on the road the bike started smoking bad. I pulled over 1 block away and they overfilled the oil. So I googles a wally world and off I went in a cloud of smoke. I purchased a turkey baster and sucked enough oil out into  a water bottle and fired her up, she's all good now. Found the nearest gas station to drop the used oil off to recycle and off I went into the fog and the rain.

No real scenic pics but here are a few when I would stop to check the bike

I had forgotten to eat and I was getting wet in the crotch and front of my shirt so I pulled over into a Mc'Ds. Ummm... I left my fly open and the pooling water was pouring into my crotch and wicking up my shirt. Put that on my list of thing I wish I never did.

Just got to the hotel and will get showered up and off to find some boudin and craklins! Woohoo!

Umm, Michael's scoot is getting broken in quick!

Glad the weather cleared up for you.   You are making good progress.    What was the criteria for heading up towards Hattiesburg and back to Mobile instead of staying on I-10?

Stay safe

Thank you for the well wishes. My criteria was put into my nav to make the fastest route with no tolls. Tolls are a problem on 2 wheels for me fumbling with money and gloves and in TX they don't have manned toll booths so I got a few photo rewards last time I rode through there.

Wow! What a day and I have lots to share...

I wake up after a solid 8 hours rest to this. Soggy, threatening thunderstorms, rain, the usual.

I start getting on it to outrun whatever Mother Nature had in store for me blast down I10. Hands down I10 is the most dangerous road I have ever ridden on in my life twice. Every stop I made folks ask during chit chat to be careful on I 10 as they drive like maniac. They're 100% correct...

I have a long day ahead of me and want to get a full bite out the miles I need to munch. The weather was cool and a bit cold so I had my liners in and was quite comfortable buzzing down the road.

Woohoo Mississippi!

I wanted to stop for the Alabama pic but there was no shoulder to pull over. I pulled off the road and did some ADVing to get this pic. hehe

One stop for gas was at Tater's in AL. Yep, I'm in the south, my peoples.

One of the very few scenic pic was where the U.S.S. Alabama is stored. I wish I had the time to visit...

I finished my trip today making it to Pensacola FL. (there's a welcome to FL sign in this pic on the left, I wanted to get the jet in the pic)

I have been mulling over to share an incident with folks but after further thought I decided I should as kind of a PSA. At one gas stop I pulled off I was the only person at the pump. I keep my radar going when I'm on the bike or off for stops. I saw someone approaching me in a creeper kind of way and my spidy sense started tingling.

The gent creeps up from my backside and get within 10' so I turn around and ask, "do we have a problem?"
He says no, "I just wanted to ask you if you have a few dollars to spare?"
I say, "no, have a nice day."
He says, "then I'll just take your wallet." (as he pulls out a knife)
I say, "son, don't do this as it's not going to go well."

As fast as I can I cracked him with the crown of my helmet I'm still wearing and down he goes in a heap and starting to leak from his face. I took the knife he dropped and put it against the curb and stomped on it and broke it in half. Hopped on the Burger and got the hell out of there.

I found another gas station to refuel and got back on the road. The adrenaline was flowing in me and I was shaking like a leaf for 20 minutes. Why do I mention this? Because I feel it is a PSA (public service announcement) to folks who travel on the road alone. Situational awareness is paramount so keep your eyes open wherever you pull into on the road and protect yourself at all times.

No I'm not proud of what I have done nor am I ashamed. I felt I was in harms way swiftly dealt with it. In retrospect did I handle the situation appropriately? idk... If I had a chance to just leave I would have but in this case I didn't. No, I wasn't going to detain him and call 911 as we all know how this would go down, he attacked me and there I am defending myself. So let your conscience be your guide...

Stats for the day.

I have a few equipment failures that I'll write about later as I'm too tired tonight. I will share some more of this leg of my journey when i get more time to digest it. I want to thank all the good folks that have reached out to me via PMs, text, and post offering their homes, or a hot meal. I'm trying meet with a few that are somewhat on my journey but the goal is to get conchshooter his bike without a mark on it in a timely manner and get home back to my life.

Peace,

Eric

Thanks for sharing the whole story.

IMHO you did the right thing, most stations have camera's at the pumps.
So lets hope the creep takes his broken weapon, licks his wound and goes home, and you don't get a call from the police.
AND hope the weather stays dry for the rest of your ride.

I'm up and rolling this morning and was have a cup of joe and looking over the scoot. There's a black epoxy like substance leaking out of the muffler cap. It is quite hard and crusty like a well cured epoxy. Thoughts?

Looks like another day with good progress.    About 500 miles remaining to Key West.

And Yikes!!!   Glad nothing worse came out of the gas station encounter.    I'm not quite sure how I would have handled that.   It makes me think about my practice of always removing my helmet when I stop.    Fortunately, despite almost always traveling by myself and at all hours of the day and night, I have not had the misfortune of such an event.    Glad you are OK and safely jumped back on the road.

The weather forecast looks pretty good for tomorrow so hopefully you'll break your string of rainy mornings.   Stay safe.

Today was uneventful and my goal was to make it to Newberry, FL to meet up with some scooter friends cashcow and his friend Ken, a very good scooter rider and has done the Iron Butt 2 times and also competed in a couple of Cannonball Rides. They were kind enough to buy me supper and a beverage this evening and put me up for the night.

I started the day off with a hardy breakfast from the Cracker Barrel, what can I say I love their hash brown casserole.

Yep, rain again...

Not much adventure to share here as I plowed through the rain for 8 hours and roughly 400 miles. This one stretch of road clearly had been hammered by a hurricane as I saw 1,000s of acres of trees snapped off, homes destroyed, and business' with ruins. This went on fo 50 miles and was sobering to see as it felt like a wasteland. In this pic at a gas stop you can see a couple trees snapped off.

I finally got to Newberry and met up with cashcow and Ken. The entryway to the place had the moss/ferns flowing from the trees.

They treated me to a nice Mex supper and beverages!

Roughly 400 miles to go and I'll knock out most of it tomorrow and meet up with Conchshooter in the morn on Saturday.

Thanks for reading!

From Kim regarding the incident...  And I quote:

Thanks Bill, please say hi to Kim for me.

Holy sh!t Eric, more rain?

Hey look on the bright side. You can always get a side job testing foul weather gear?

Oh, and remind me never to ride down South with you.

Yep, I think I'm taking over Doug's crown since he hung up the spurs.

Note to self, never F@*k with a 7 foot tall dude on a scooter wearing a helmet.
Fxd that for you.

+1, I think you totally did the right thing. The number one priority is you and your health. I think it was an easy, quick way to resolve the situation.

Thank you guys, I'm still somewhat shaken up over that incident. In 40 years of riding a lot miles I've never had something like that happen.

On another note at the Mex place last night I dropped my phone in the gravel and broke the screen in 3 places. :(  I'll see if I can find a place to fix it on my travels.

It's always something, right?  :)

No, I wasn't going to detain him and call 911 as we all know how this would go down, he attacked me and there I am defending myself.

It's a lot easier to take of things yourself than to involve the police - up to a point. I'm sure that varies per person. Keep your spidey sense going and get that phone fixed (get a case - it's cheap insurance).

Checked into a hotel in Naples and will finish this trip tomorrow with 217 miles to go.

Here are a couple pics stolen from cashcow that he posted on MV.

Today was uneventful with really nothing of interest. Amazingly it was calling for rain when I left so I made like a good Catholic and pulled out in a hurry!

Ken and Bill were off to a breakfast and were expecting to get wet as well.

I forgot to post this pic last night and I blame that on the margaritas but total miles for yesterday were 373.

The Burger has burnt zero oil this entire trip, I check every gas stop. You can't really see in this pic but it's 3/4 full and has remained there for the duration.

Stopped at Bob Evans for lunch. Good night, it's like Seizure World had a jail break and rolled into this joint...

Stats for the day. 317 miles for the day.

My nav has been intermittent so these number aren't accurate but will get you in the right church, maybe the wrong pew... Roughly about 1,361 miles total...

On a down note, you can see in the Bob Evans pic the muffler cap is missing. It had vibrated loose and started to melt on the muffler. I just removed it and stowed it, I'll order Michael a new one when i get there. I'm super bummed about this...

Thanks for read and as always, life is short, enjoy the ride!

Eric

Tomorrow will be much more rewarding pictures, I promise!

Are those the "more rewarding pictures" you mentioned?

Glad the trip is still going well.    Seems strange that sustained highway speeds would melt that muffler cap.
