ESTO 2017 -- Alleghany Inn / Sparta, NC -- Official Info
« on: May 08, 2017, 01:16:02 PM »
I just got off the phone with the Alleghany Inn in Sparta, NC. I reserved a block of 15 rooms for ESTO on Sep 8 - 10. Our group code is "ESTO17". Rooms are $76.62 / night (tax included).

You can reserve a room online or by calling 888-372-2501. Don't forget to use the group code "ESTO17". Their web site is: http://www.alleghanyinn.com/

It's official. Make your reservations. Hopefully we need more than 15 rooms, but it's a start. There are no other groups at the hotel that weekend at this point. Any un-used rooms in the block will be released two weeks before the event.

I suspect my reservation will be for Thu/Fri night as Chris needs two days to get home from Sparta and must be at work on Monday. Basically we have Sun-Sat to do a loop from/to Pittsburgh via the Dragon and then Sparta. He really liked southeast OH, so it will probably be southeast OH (Sun), eastern KY (Mon), VA/TN/NC to Dragon (Tue), Dragon loop (Wed), Sparta via Wheels Through Time and BRP (Thu), Snake Loop (Fri), and home via 16/20/etc (Sat).

I guess the idea of spending a full week on the road with my son got me all excited and I wasted a few hours of my employers time roughing out a plan/route for that week. Other than a 450 mile day to get to PA from Sparta, the other days are all in the 325 - 350 range (with the exception of the Maggie Valley to Sparta half-day on the BRP) which is just about perfect.

Sat - Chris rides to Pittsburgh from NY
Sun - Southeast Ohio / western WV. Stay in Charleston.
Mon - scoot into eastern KY (32) and head south (lots of 7) finishing on 160 into VA. Stay in Norton.
Tue - work our way to Deals Gap via lots of twisty, non-BRP roads (70, 2xx). Stay at Deals Gap resort.
Wed - Loop the Dragon, Cherohala, Blood Mtn, etc and finsh in Maggie Valley. Stay at Rolling Brook Motel (next to Wheels Thru Time museum).
Thu - Visit the museum in the AM, then hop on the BRP to Sparta. Short day (under 250 miles). Stay at Alleghany Inn.
Fri - Sparta Loop (58, Snake, Roan Mtn, NC80, Little Switzerland, etc). Stay at Alleghany Inn.
Sat - Return home to Pittsburgh via 16, 41, 60, 20, 119.
Sun - Chris rides home to NY

If my son can take Monday off, then we'll stay in Sparta Sat night and do a second Sparta loop to the east (R Doug turf), then ride to PA on Sunday and he can ride home to NY on Monday.

Well, putting it on the calendar; let's see what else gets in my way. It's always either money, work or life emergencies.

My son Chris messed his left hand up in a dirt bike crash a couple weeks ago. He appears to be done for the season, so I'm probably not doing my 9-day ride that ends at ESTx. At this point I'm thinking about riding down on Thursday, do day loops on Fri/Sat, then roll home on Sunday.

I'm very interested in your route.  I have a nice paved / gravel road route for my Saturday day loop.  What are you doing Saturday of the meet, a portion of this route?  If not, are you interested in my loop?

Current plans are to ride the SM500 Monday-Wednesday. I'm on the fence about whether I'm gonna make a run down to Barber, or just enjoy that whole area Thursday/Friday. I have no plans for Saturday, so maybe I'll just fixate on your tail light.

Sweet!  I'd love to get a couple of folks to join me in traveling the "roads less traveled" especially the ones around Burkes Garden, Mt. Rogers, and continuing on the ridge through Troutdale, Sugar Grove, and Cripple Creek (all in VA)

Damn I want to go. But I'm going to be on holidays. ...in Nova Scotia.
Maybe next year.
My GPS just told me to turn left, then turn left, then turn left, then turn left.
So if I go too far left do I end up right?

Just came back from Gaspe, Cabot Trail and the Bay of Fundy.  Theirs quite a bit of construction on the Cabot if thats your destination.

On the plus side, one of the detours is BETTER than the Cabot itself!

I'm a bit of a slacker I guess. I just made my reservations. There was a chance of a job change looming that would have screwed things up (offer received, offer rejected). I plan on arriving on Thursday afternoon and doing day loops on both Friday (Snake Loop) and Saturday (Dougs Loop), then leaving for home/PA on Sunday. Chris will be joining me (broken finger is mending slowly). We may have to bail a day early if he can't get Monday the 11th off as well, but the plan is for him to ride home from PA (to NY) on Monday. We'll see...

FWIW, the route down is:
Saturday - Chris rides to Pittsburgh
Sunday - eastern Ohio
Monday (labor day) - eastern Kentucky
Tuesday - to Dragon
Wednesday - Dragon/Cherohala/N. GA Loop
Thursday - Wheels of Time museum (AM) / BRP to Sparta (PM)

I inquired about the expired "ESTO17" group code. The girl said she would ask her manager about it. Calling is easy peasy.

Because several have expressed interest in my Saturday loop (both on this thread and via PMs), I thought you may want a preview.

There's one section which is questionable to me right now and that's whether or not 740 (US FSR 14) is continues at the place where segment one ends and segment two begins.  Basecamp maps show that it does.  Google maps does not.

I've been on 740 from west to east, but never made it to the end.  There was a bad storm coming from the east that day and I needed to head back.  The worst case is we will need to turn around and double back to Speedwell to reconnect to Jefferson National Forest Road 57.

Does anyone have any fuel limitations?  The first fuel stop will be in Tazewell.  There is an opportunistic stop available in Wytheville.

This ride will be a mix a classic NC and VA paved twisty bits, paved "C" roads, and several fairly well groomed gravel roads.  There are slight sections of double track but all unpaved sections are big bike friendly or the avid dirt rider.

Leg one  191 miles – 6 hrs

https://goo.gl/maps/hnVXy7K9dBT2

Leg two 64 miles – 2 hrs 40 min

https://goo.gl/maps/J6HeLCri5M82

Our first stop will be on top of White Mountain

Here's an example of sights you'll see along the Forest Service Road sections.

We'll need to stop and climb to the top of Big Walker Lookout.  Group shot here?

Garry, I might meet you at Wheels Through Time on Thursday. I'll be at Iron Horse on Wednesday night.

Doug, route looks awesome. Since I'm not a REAL adv rider without carrying fuel, I'm good on that front.

I doubt you'll need MSR bottles of fuel for this route with your bike's main capacity.  But, if you want to bring them, there's nothing wrong with being a boy scout.  Someone may need them.  :)

Interesting.  I started to plot the route into Garmin's Basecamp and it shows less time to complete.  I double and triple checked that it was the same route.

Regardless, I tacked on some extra twisty bits east of Sparta to keep us entertained in case we need more riding.  For those who are pooped, there will be an exit point.

While the route is less than 40% dirt roads, I have no idea what our pace will be on those sections.  Some of the roads we'll have to stop when meeting traffic coming the other direction.  So, we'll have a buffer if the day runs long and an optional addition if the day runs quick.

I know a lot of you most likely have the Snake (421) and  The Back of the Dragon (Rt. 16) in mind to hit sometime during the weekend.  If anyone is seeking a day route of paved stuff, here are a few suggestions:

The first one below can be modified to take on the Snake if it wasn't already on your agenda for another day.  Just skip the circling back to 58 and do an out and back towards Bristol on the Snake and take 421 all the way east to 88.  Then, work your way back to Sparta.

Also, I wasn't able to add any additional modifications to this route.  But, you can easily avoid the interstate via Rt. 52 on the eastern side and highly recommended Loves Mill Rd. on the NW side.  Loves Mill is like a little roller coaster.  :)

In fact, this one can also be modified to include the Snake.  It all depends on how many miles you want to do.  Both of these are just south of 300 for those who want to stop and smell the roses a bit more.  Either can be expanded, as needed.

For me, it's all about the weather. Raining...? Netflix and food, and maybe a mellow ride around locally. Dry? Yes, snake by all means. I've ridden that *&)@)@*#&ing like 16 times in the rain, and the hell with that ever again. I'm kinda sick of trying. I believe it's just a myth to ride that road dry at this point.
