Who Rode Today in Region 1?
« on: April 22, 2017, 07:29:23 PM »
I did, I did!!!

Two hundred miles on the new-to-me Suzuki SV650 with M.Brane on the 94 VFR.

Highway 33 north out of Ojai to Lockwood Valley to Mil Portrero Road to Hudson Ranch Road Cerro Noroeste Road to 166 and south on 33. Lunch at 'The Place' in Ventucopa. Saw a gorgeous BMW R60/?? (can't remember shit) which I didn't take a picture of.. (what is wrong with me?)

Home in time for beer o'clock.

Does Baja count as Region 1? If so, I did.

Tried to do Baja in December with a friend from Florida, but Passport was right at the 6 month limit and Mex Insurance at Tecate (USA) was half-assed, so declined. A result of poor planning on my part. Ready to go again when new passport arrives. We had a great time anyway running along the border into Arizona. Experienced a lot of neat stuff (heavy, man).

Tomorrow I will be riding to Stockton in the morning for a range day. It will be an interesting commute for me tomorrow as I have always lived within 20 miles of work (only >5 for the last 5 years). It will be an eye opener for the majority of Bay area commuters who live 30-50 miles from work. I know people who commute from Rohnert Park to Alameda every single day, which seems absolutely bizarre to me.

So, this poses a question. How far was your longest commute and why?

Longest ride to work, 35 miles each way.
Current ride to work 14 miles about 20 min, half of it is along the coast

So, this poses a question. How far was your longest commute and why?

Longest commute ride was South Land Park in Sacramento east on US50 to Folsom and back...52 mile round trip. Did that for a couple of years, but telecommuting a few days a week made it bearable. However, once I convinced management that I should work out of our data center south of town, the daily commute dropped to 7 miles one way. But I can stretch that out to 15 or 20 miles if I take the scenic route across the river in Yolo County, through West Sacramento, south along the levee road, and back over the Freeport Bridge. Coming home that way makes for a nice way to unwind.

When I lived in Redding, CA (the hottest place on earth per Mr Smooth) I commuted up and down CA 299 to Round Mountain. Nice mountain road, even after CALTRANS straightened out the gnarly bits. Only drove my truck in the 3 or 4 real winter months with snow and ice precluding riding.

I rode today in the Malibu canyons area northwest of Los Angeles.

Amazing roads, a perfect day (only slightly spoiled by some reprobates that pestered us at breakfast).

Ok so technically rode yesterday to shakedown the repaired front forks on the Suzuki. 175 mile ride - would have been a Kevin Stevens type of ride had we not fueled 17 miles from home. For some reason M.Brane was nervous about not filling up in Frazier Park, but then by himself, he gets 30 mpg. With me, he gets 50.

Sorry no pictures, but we went east and did Bouquet>Spunky>Francisquitos>Lake Elizabeth>Pine Canyon>Old Ridge Route>138>Gorman Post and into Frazier Park for lunch at La Sierra.

Then home via Lockwood Valley, 33, and 150. South side of Sespe Summit was cool, cloudy, and drizzly, but the rest of the ride was sunny. Very windy on Gorman Post Road.

On Sunday I rode from the Bay Area over Sonora Pass and then south on 395 to Big Pine.  The next morning I rode up to the Bristlecone Pine forest before turning around for home.  On the way home I went over Monitor Pass and and Kit Carson Pass on Hwy 88.  Met a friend in Stockton for dinner before going home.  About 800 miles in 2 days.  A good 2 days.

I've done this three times this week on 3 different motorcycles...
From La Mesa, I8 west -> I15 north ->CA78 west -> San Marcos.

The highway drone is not pleasant but it is the quickest way when you're moving house. 1 more bike to transport tomorrow...I'm planning a scenic ride through the San Pasqual Valley.

I won a couple CDs from the local radio station for knowing that yesterday was EB White's birthday.  DJ said I could pick them up at the station in Ferndale.  So I did, and continued around the Lost Coast loop.  Awesome views above the fog on Wildcat (the first hill out of Ferndale) and then things cleared up for the view of the mouth of the Bear River and points south.

I did! First time on the bike since I fractured the collarbone at the end of April. Just my boring surface street commute, but I was on the bike. Whew!

Still in physical therapy and not quite where I promised the orthopedist where I'd be when I climbed back on, but the younger son needed a car, so I'm back on the bike.

Felt good.   :bigok:
