K1000LT and a F14 Tomcat?
« on: March 17, 2017, 03:52:15 PM »
I lost my father to Alzheimer's years ago but we as a family toured on m/c's over all of North America and many parts of Europe. Anywho, here's an interesting story I'll share. Pop had a K1000LT that he had painted like his friends F14 Tomcat. Rode it to Miramar for a photo opportunity and BMWMOA wanted to put it on the cover of their magazine. DoD got snarly about a German bike painted like one of their war planes. Letters went back and forth back then and they eventually got it sorted.

And the cover of BMWMOA

Show up on time, do your best and don't grumble about the outcome.

Oddly enough, I remember that cover.

My Dad's '85 K100S was also on the MOA cover a few years before. I'll see if I can find it.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Very cool!

Not the point of your post, but I have a soft spot for Tomcats.  I grew up in Bethpage out on Long Island, about a mile from Grumman.  Hardly a day went by where an F14 (or Hawkeye or Intruder) would fly low and loud over the house.

  Cool pic.  Back when I was in it was pretty common for a squadron commander to have his (usually sporty & foreign) car painted up like that -- usually passed off as 'training' for the painter(s).

I know what you mean.  I live in CT, once home to A-10s. Every weekend you could see them flying low over the river or shoreline. After 9/11 I'd see them over my neighborhood once a day. I loved it. Eventually they were moved to Mass.  and all I see these days are helicopters.

Very cool story!
You never see a motorcycle parked outside a psychiatrists' office.
Where am I?
