The eye of the needle is almost upon me.  I'll be launching in aboot 10-15 minutes.  I predict a dry ride with a sunny ending.

I take every Friday off.   Shoulda/woulda/coulda gone down yesterday; was just afraid the entire weekend would be a washout.  Shades of 2008, when I stayed an extra day because the weather was supposed to clear and then it rained harder than ever.

IF this storm passes through today; I'll ride down for the day tomorrow.

The view isn't good from home today.  Glad I'm not riding through this.  (It'd really rip up my backyard!)

The biblical rains didn't stop here until about 3pm, so I don't bad about not spending all day getting there in the crap. I do, however, feel sorry for not BEING there during the good stuff. Try to stay dry tomorrow, and be safe, everyone.

D@mn shame we weren't riding with him. Heyna?

I'm not riding down tomorrow.  Too many scattered showers on radar.  Unless it clears considerably overnight.

I left last night to go to WV to pick up Sheri's mom.  We got an early start today and made it back home in NC around Noon.  I darn near jumped on my bike and headed your way.  Then, I saw it was only in the 40s there and lost most of my motivation.   :)

I saw images of snow in the road at Canaan Valley from early this morning.  How was the ride home (other than the wind)?

Cool and gray to start, then cool and sunny to finish.  You just need to know how to read the radar and adjust accordingly.

I think my face got a little sunburned this weekend.  8)

Got home just after 5. This morning Eric and I took 219 north, then a character building ride on 15 west over the mountain (33 degrees, snow on the ground, fog) to Webster Springs. Then the sun came out and we had a great time on 15W to Flatwoods, and then an awesome ride up 16 north (passed 2 cars in 60+ miles) where we parted ways in Ellenboro. That section of 16 is epic and way under-rated. Great weekend for sure. 999 miles on the clock. Worst dampness the whole weekend was drizzle/light rain for about a half hour on Saturday morning near Goshen. Pics to follow this evening.

The Canadians are in Sparta tonight as planned.  It was a bit chilly this morning when we left but we had a great day of riding.  I was so good that I lost the feeler on my right peg.  That probably explains why the side of my boot kept rubbing on the pavement.

Tomorrow we're doing the Snake among other routes. We will be back in Sparta tomorrow night.

It was nice seeing everybody in Marlinton. As they say, it's not the quantity but the quality that counts.   :bigok:

Thanks guys for sharing with us.

Up here in the NE corner of PA we had a very windy rainy cold (mid 40's) day.
Yesterday (Sat.) wasn't much better, just a little warmer.

Glad you guys were nuts brave enough to ride and make lemonade from lemons.

I waited for the heavy early morning rain to pass by and left Pittsburgh about 9:30. I wasn't sure how fast the front to the west was moving, so my plan was to take a more or less direct shot to Marlinton. Here's looking down on Uniontown from Route 40 near the Summit Hotel:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I worked my way down PA381 to WV26 to WV72 along the Cheat River and finally down to route 50. Here's a photo from the Cheat Mtn section of 50:

To be honest, I don't remember exactly where this one was taken. I think it's from Leadmine Mtn Rd near Fairfax Stone:

A shot of the bike just outside Thomas:

A view from the windmills on 219 north of Parsons:

I decided to check out this namesake road. It just goes back maybe a quarter mile then turns into a driveway:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I was just north of Marlinton at 3pm and decided to extend my route a bunch since it was such a nice afternoon. I headed east on 66 past Snowshoe and toward Cass. This is along 66 on the way to Cass:

And a couple photos from Cass:

I thought the red barn kinda popped against the blue sky, so I stopped for this photo near Greenbank on 28:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I continued out 28 north to 250 east/south and took that to Monterey (video coming). From there I headed south on 220 to 84, then took Back Creek Rd (aka 600) south to 39. Here's a photo of the lake along Back Creek Rd:

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I was riding solo on Saturday. My day started by taking 39 east through Washing and Jefferson Forest under heavy gray skies but no rain. It started to drizzle a bit more consistently as I approached Goshen and then on to Goshen Pass. There were signs of lots of water along the pass. Here are a couple photos of the river at the Goshen Pass overlook thing. Water was really high everywhere, nearing flood stage I suspect.

From 39/Goshen Pass, I headed for 252, then up to Raphine Rd, over to 11, then 56 up to the BRP. It started to drizzle just before reaching Goshen. I needed to pee and figured I could check the radar before commiting to the BRP, so I stopped at the truck stop next to I-81 for a break. When I finished the break, the light rain had stopped. The views from the BRP were nice enough despite the clouds. Here are a couple waterfall shots by the "Old Logging Railroad" overlook. Followed by several more BRP overlook photos.

I bailed off the BRP at route 43 and headed down to Buchanan for lunch at the bistro and gas. Cloudy going in, sunny coming out. Woot! I had a nice ride up 43 to Eagle Rock, then took Craigs Creek Rd over to New Castle where I picked up 311. 311 was in great shape and the sun was shining. I made three passes and recorded video on the last run up the mountain. Video to be posted later.

I followed 311 to its end, then slabbed to Lewisburg and took 219 north to Marlinton. I hit a couple short sun showers along the way but nothing that really qualified as rain. The weather was still an unsettled mix of showers and sun back at the hotel and I got this photo of a nice rainbow while warming up in my room with a beer.

On Sunday, Eric and I were the last to leave, just before the power was being shut off to the hotel and surrounding area to fix storm daamge. It had rained hard earlier in the morning so the roads were soaked but the radar looked promising. Despite the cold (40-ish) we decided to head north on 219 and risk lower temps at higher elevations. We had to get over the mountain to the west to get to the good route home. 219 north to Valley Head was cold and damp. 15 west over the mountain to Webster Springs was even colder (33 - 35 degrees) with snow on the ground at the upper elevations. And then there was the thick fog just to kick it all up a notch. Good times.

Once in Webster Springs, temps warmed into the 40s and the sun came out, so the ride to Flatwoods on 15 was nice. We slabbed south on I-79 for 20 miles or so to get to 16 at Big Otter. 16 north from there to Harrisville is epic. 60+ miles of continuous flowing corners. Yes, people live along the road, but it's still a great ride. We stopped about halfway up in Millstone for lunch, then continued north to Ellenboro (jct 50).

We gassed up and headed our separate ways. I decided to make time on big roads into PA (50, 119, 43, 119 again), then take back roads home. I was getting close to home on my usual route north when I ran into this road closed sign. Nope, no getting around this one. Luckily there was another good option to get home a couple miles back.

All in all, I had a great weekend. I managed 999 miles on the clock and only got rained on briefly twice, and that was more like drizzle than real rain (no rain gear required). Friday, Saturday afternoon, and most of Sunday were all blue skies and sunshine. Can't complain about that given the forecast a few days earlier.

We did a 350 mile loop from Sparta today. Notable roads were 58 to 421 (The Snake). After the snake we did 143 and then 80. On the way back to Sparta we did a portion of the BRP. Lots of good riding.

That's a great loop Leon. I plan to do that as my day loop in Sept for ESTO at Sparta.

I nearly turned around about a half hour into my trip, but I'm sure glad I didn't. By the time I was in PA things were getting better, and just continued to improve in West Virginia. Saturday and Sunday had some cold and wet moments, but nothing too dramatic.

This was also a trip I really needed.

After breaking my ankle last fall I wasn't really sure how I would respond on a trip like this. I've done plenty of freeway and typical road miles since, but no twisties or dirt. Fortunately, following Smoker and Garry on Saturday and Sunday really helped restore some confidence. Thanks Guys!

There's definitely still a long way to go though, especially in the dirt, but that's just something I'll have to continue to work on and practice.

Really had a great time though and hit some phenomenal roads. Looking forward to the next one.

I don't recall you having an issue on the dirt roads (mud) we were on last May.

That was a good time. I think if the slow speed mental lapse I had on the trail in August hadn't resulted in the broken ankle I wouldn't be as paranoid. I'll just have to view it as a not so subtle reminder to keep focused in the dirt and to keep working on technique. It's definitely worth it.

The Canadians made it back home yesterday. All in all, we were gone ten days and did exactly 6,000 km (3,728 miles) for an average of 373 miles per day if you count in miles.

There were no hiccups with my new Super Ténéré except that a lock popped out of a side case and I lost the peg feeler on the right side.

I enjoyed meeting some new people and seeing some familiar faces.

The weather turned out to be not as bad as the forecasts were saying. We did get some cooler temperatures the whole trip but not a huge issue with the heated vests and grips.
