I was always intrigued by ferrets but many states restrict them because if they get out they are an invasive species. That, and the stories about how they get into trouble. That sounds entertaining until you have to live with what amounts to a much more able 2 year old.
The invasive species thing is completely specious. It has never actually happened, but poultry farmers have somehow spread the idea that it could.
As far as pets go, they have their pros and cons. On the positive side, they are very, very intelligent and affectionate and playful. On the con side, the phrase "to ferret things out" is based on reality. They are far, far more inquisitive than you might possibly imagine and can get into things you'd never have suspected were at risk.
Also, they don't live very long. And they need to be de-scented, and even then need baths. Thankfully, they love baths.
