How long have you had MC license?
« on: December 05, 2013, 02:59:52 PM »
And do you think there is any correlation between that number and the skills or even experience that one might subconsciously assign to a high number?

Got my license at 18 or 19 so...  25 years or so?  There were many of those years where my skills did not go up with time.  There were several years where my skills raised exponentially and I cherish those years.
I hope there are years in the future where that happens again as I'm currently stagnant at best.

More like 3 months experience repeated.

I had a guy in a BRC course who had been riding for 20 years on a permit.  He almost flunked the exam.

They didn't have MC licenses when I started riding . . .(really, the bike wasn't steam powered) (but it DID have a total loss oiling system) . . I left the country, came back, and there they were . . . .I went in to renew my auto license, and asked the fella behind the counter about MC endorsements . . . .

How long you been riding?

About ten years.

Done -- you ain't dead, you must know what you're doing.

But, I agree, much of my riding hasn't materially improved my skills . . . . . .. experience is simply an opportunity to gain skills, certainly not a guarantee.
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Bet if the test was polish bike, ride to bar, stand around talking about bike, ride home, wipe bike down, he'd have passed with flying colors.

Since the fall of 1980, when I turned 14. I actually took the MSF course when I was 13 because the only offered it in the summer and I didn't turn 14 until September. Had a M/C as my only form of transportation until I was 16.

Rode off and on with a permit for 10 years. Got serious about riding in 2003. My wife and I planned a cross country trip so I thought it might be a good idea to have a license.

Lets see. I got my license in 1966.  :gerg:

Geeze, it's so long ago I can't remember if you needed a MC endorsement at that time?

I got my endorsement in 1986 and didn’t use it that much.  When I started riding seriously in 2005, I became more serious with training.

Between the books read and classes taken, I would say I have at least a masters degree in knowledge.  That doesn’t mean I’m a better rider… just better educated.     :D   I only wish I had a place and time to practice certain techniques again and again and again.

Growing up in eastern Oregon meant riding motorcycles without a license (of any kind), generally wearing a pair of shorts and tennis shoes.  Once I got to college I didn't have money for a motorcycle.

I've had my endorsement 13 years, when my son could drive himself to school.  My childhood riding should not be misconstrued as skills acquisition.  I had no idea what I was doing--Just turn the fast stick, hold on and don't crash.

1971 when I turned 14. Of course I'd already been riding dirt bikes for a couple years anyway. But my dad insisted on it.

I don't believe age or experience has a whole lot to do with riding competency or proficiency. Paying attention and continually learning do. And that can come quickly or slowly. Or sometimes not at all.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I've been riding for about 30 or so years. Got my license only about 14 years ago. I do not think it made me more aware or conscious or even a better rider. At some level it gave me confidence to ride past cops and not worry if I were to be stopped. Beyond that I rode the same way to the testing center as I did home after passing.

Started way back then to ride, quit, then I came back to riding about 10 years ago.

The motorcycle was my first vehicle; 250 Yamaha where I learned to ride from a friend who had a Honda 350-4 I think (my second was a 360).

Got my license in fall of 76. Test was in Fredericksburg at the DMV. Start the bike. Turn signals, brake, headlight, horn. Go to the end of the parking lot, loop around, come back. Stop here.

You passed, here's your endorsement.

The Army required the Defensive Drivers Course before you could ride on base. A much better class. Pretty close to the ERC I took a couple of years back. Emergency stops, pay attention to traffic, here's a bunch of pictures of motorcycle accidents (he was a Md Highway Patrolman). Saved my ass at least twice by realizing the guy making the turn didn't see me and my realizing it and stopping before it went south.

I don't think I learned much more until a friend talked to me after getting back on a bike about the 6 seriously close calls and numerous ones. After that I've read and applied proficient motorcycling, read several track books, total control which was quite interesting, been to the track several times, performed most maintenance tasks (I never touched an engine leaving it to Jiffy Lube Me Up until I got on bikes). I've put 125,000 miles on the Hayabusa and another 20k or so on different bikes.

I'm no expert, but I do explore and have experience. I am better :)

I got my motorcycle endorsement 13 years ago. I haven't really taken it as seriously as I should and I haven't devoted a lot of time to professional training.

Consequently I would say I'm not very good at it.

Spring of '98 so not quite 16 years. What I found somewhat comical was the DMV already trusted me to drive 18 wheels, but I needed a special license for just 2. I went to the local DMV when they were closed, and practiced the ride test until I had it nailed. I still practice those drills as well as other slow-speed stuff. I like being able to do U-turns on narrow 2-lane roads with my feet on the pegs.

Never rode a motorcycle till 1975. A friend had one and had to go in for dinner and threw me the keys and helmet and said take it out for a ride. Who am i to say no. Hour and a half later i came back.

Shortly after that i bought a 1976 XL125. Rode it for almost a year until i got pulled over and had no license. The cop said to ride it home and get a license.

The first time passed the written test but failed the road test. The officer said i had to do the hole course in first gear. Well i had to put my foot down once so he failed me. He had an attitude and said to go practice and come back another time.

I got back in line and got and got a different  officer. I told him what happend and he said the other guy was prejudice towards motorcycles. He said to me i know you can ride a bike and you know you can. Do it in any gear you want. Passed and he handed me my license.

Official license in the early 80's. Only in the last 3 years or so have I really paid much attention to skills improvement.

Was riding for years without license (had a drivers license but no M1)
Think I got my M1 endorsement when I was 18 or 19 (29 or 30 years ago)

Someday I hope to be a proficient MC rider, I'll just keep working at it till then

21 years licensed here.  I got the basics down in my teens and luck carried me for the first 12 years or so  8). Since then luck has still been on my side, but I'm pretty happy with my progress on paved surfaces.  As the years go by, I find applying new/improved skills more rewarding then pushing an unknown limit with blind effort.  No need to "keep up" or "drop" other riders.  Off road I'm still have many new skills to apply and the more rapid improvements in my riding keep me very excited for the next ride.

I did some riding in 1969-70 with a M2 license to ride a moped.  Then didn't ride until 1984 when I got my M1 endorsement.

30 years riding and some decent schoolin' taught me I didn't know squat back then.

I got my motorcycle only (100cc or less) license early in 1972 at age 15. I turned 16 at the tail end of 1972, I upgraded to the full license in 1973 and jumped up to a 550cc big bike after having a year of riding under my belt. Seems like yesterday.  :)

pretty humble group.

I'm sure we all thought we were hot shit when we were 18.

30 years riding and some decent schoolin' taught me I didn't know squat back then.

Last thing I want to do now is wrap myself around a tree or take a nap under truck wheels trying to prove something.

Every time I get on the bike I think about how this could be my last ride.  It's a humbling sport.  But, the rewards well outweigh the risk.  That's why we ride, yes?   :D

Got a learner license in the early 70s but didn't get my full license until 1980. I kept failing the test.  :-[

September 24, 1995 is the date my world changed.

That's the date that's on my original MSF completion card.  They said not to lose it since the only way to get a replacement was to take the course again.  Of course I have sheets of blank ones next to me now so I guess that's not that big of an issue anymore.   ;D

I was stationed in HI when I got mine.  Speaking of humbling, it was an interesting experience for a white guy to learn what it feels like to be a minority, and not a favored one, in the US.  15 of us showed up to take the test.  2 of us passed.  Tester was a local cop w/ hair down to his waist who showed up on some custom chopper and ran the whole test before we got started.  Impressive and intimidating and it totally ruled out any possibility for someone claiming their bike just couldn't do it.  Instead of bringing my nighthawk 650, I rented a 250cc scooter downtown and took the test on that.  The other guy that passed was on a KE100 or something similarly tiny.  Tester was miffed that he had to pass me and made no bones about saying it.  That was probably the beginning of what I consider a pretty high standard for skills.

To this day, when teaching someone, I will always show them what the standard is before asking them to try to attain it.

^this . . . . . after almost 50 years, I finally think I'm getting to be a decent rider . . . I want to see how good I can get before, well, I don't get any better.
