ECU - Programming Error
« on: November 25, 2015, 07:39:53 AM »
Brought the Wethead to the local dealer yesterday to get the NAV5 mount replaced under warranty and get some scheduled service that was overdue from the previous owner.  It wasn't supposed to take long and they asked if I could hang out and wait for the bike.

In addition to replacing some switch gear, the ECU was due for a software update.  Somewhere in the middle of flashing the firmware, they got a Programming Error message.  Several calls to the Motherland and four hours later, the owner gave me a ride home while they continue to figure out how to unbrick my bike.   :-[

That's typically an ECU swap. Hope there's one in country.

Most bricked reflashes of computers result in a non-servicable condition which requires replacement.

I'm pretty much preparing myself for that eventuality.  I guess if it had to happen, this is a good time of year for it.  Between work travel and the holiday's I really won't miss many riding opportunities anyway.

Did the previous owner send the ECU off to one of the independent reflashers out there?  BrenTuning or somebody like that?

I'm sure that didn't happen.  The bike was barely used when I bought it with 3,800 miles on the odometer.  The owner never even took the Nav5 off the bike long enough to register it with Garmin.

It was purchased and serviced (600 mi) from the same dealer its currently sitting with.

Good thing it happened in winter and at the dealership at least.

Yikes, I'm sorry to read about your current bricked reflash.

My WC GS is due for its 24k service.  I suppose I should trailer it to the dealer and drop it off instead of waiting for the service to be completed and ride it home?   :o

Winter yes....and I'm also pretty sure that this could ONLY happen at the dealer.  I know I surely don't have access to mothership for firmware downloads.

In my case being 15 min away from the dealer did come in handy.

24k-Isn't that a valve check too? Will they do it warm? I thought it had to be stone cold to check.

Well, that would be a long wait.

Yet another reason to trailer it to the dealer.  Damn, I hate placing my bike on a trailer when it's in running condition.

Best answer!

Seriously, get a service loaner. Talk them out of a demo for a couple of days. It's a great way to try/get tempted by new stuff.

Update - After a lot of back forth and data being sent to BMW Germany; BMW Germany instructed BMW NA to place an order for a new DME unit.   ;)

Bike should be ready for pickup by the time I get home from work travel.

It's home!  It runs! The Nav5 comes on immediately every time!

And as a small token of goodwill, the dealer installed a harness that routes the cockpit accessory plug directly to the battery instead of through the CANBUS.
