Movies! Movies! Movies! (potential spoilers)

Went to see The Book Thief yesterday.  Excellent performances all around; the transitions between English and German language were a little awkward at times though.

The Book Thief Official Trailer #1 (2013) - Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson Movie HD

Later, back home we watched Charge on Netflix.  Very engaging.

Safety not guaranteed ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1862079/ )

This was one of those movies where you're shown and told that the protagonist has to be nuts, but becomes rather beloved and someone that everyone involved wants to protect. The ending was pretty well telegraphed, but still came with a great and well deserved payoff. Very character driven with some really good dialog and character exploration. I really enjoyed it, though I went into it expecting it to be rather trite.

That was a good one.

John Dies At The End was another odd little gem.

Saw Why We Ride last night.  Entertaining up to a point, I'd give it 3 stars out of 5.  Not much content in the way of sport-touring stuff.  I liked the historical accounts of the early racers the most, as well as the "my first bike" accounts.  The music they chose was a little too schmaltzy, absolutely grating towards the end.

Wait for the video.

I found it a lil more enjoyable -- 4 outa 5, I spose . . .

It would be a great intro to riding and riders for no-motorcyclists, who will, of course, not be in the audience . . . . .

I found the family focus (mostly toward the end) smile inducing.

A suitably edited version might make a useful lobbying tool for the AMA . . . . . .
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

The Ferris Bueller Godzilla movie and the Korean movie The Host both have one thing in common... and IMO it's the one thing that makes them both fall on their faces... and that's the apparent need and agenda for the movie to try to teach me something. Screw that... Pacific Rim was WAY better because... it was monsters smashing shit, and giant f*$^&! robots smashing monsters. I neither need nor want anything more than that in my monster flicks.

The Perfect Host ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1334553/ )

Is the crazy guy just a little weird or is he a serial killer hiding in plain sight? Hmmm.... David Hyde Pierce sure as heck isn't your typical Niles Crane in this movie. This was pretty well crafted, and it took me a little while to see what was going on. It's got a few nice little interstitial twists and turns, and you're always wondering... what now?

A solid 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Walking with Dinosaurs.  Saw it with the kids.  Spectacular animation- the dinosaurs really look real- very few cues it's fake.  Neat story.  Kids liked it, so did I.     Worth seeing almost for the incredible scenery and visuals.

Saw the latest Hobbit movie yesterday, in 3D. It was so much better than last years model! It also had some Elf babes, which in itself is a good thing. :inlove: The 3D was very well done and I actually ducked when a severed head came flying my way.

Agreed on most counts. I thought the previous was well done also.
It took me a bit to figure out who Tauriel was then it was a duh moment. She is hotter in this than Lost. Must be the ears.

We were a little let down that it it will be continued but I guess there are a bunch of ends that need tying up before Smaug meets his.

You have obviously not yet seen 1977's "The Island of Dr. Moreau" with Burt Lancaster, Michael York, and Barbara Carrera. They managed to take outstanding source material - what I believe to be H.G. Well's best, darkest, creepiest novel - and turn it into a steaming pile of c***! Even considering 1977 special effects technology, there was no reason for this to be so poorly re-imagined!

Jersey Boys

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I haven't seen the Broadway show nor did I know any of the backstory heading into the theater. I fell hard for John Lloyd Young's voice as Frankie Valli and Erich Bergen's "aw shucks/savvy" Bob Gaudio is very endearing. I like the interplay of singing and scenes. I've read reviews that didn't...not quite sure I get that. If you like the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, escape the summer heat for 2.5 hours and check it out.
I used to make a bigger impression.

Gambit: Funny. We all liked it. Diaz' "gosh dangit" interpretation of Texans gets a little old, but it's Hollywood's impression of TX and England, so there's no surprise there.

Good Neighbor Sam: Fun "screwball" comedy from 1964. Jack Lemon playing to his strengths.

The Machine: A really good new movie that effectively combines the morality tale of "Metropolis" with the cinematographic feel of "Blade Runner". Two thumbs up.

Project Censored The Movie: Very thought provoking with some historically "big guns" stepping up and pointing out how much corporate media has become complicit with the actions of power brokers in the "halls of justice". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF-DAJlvX4E

The Raid - Redemption: It might be more accurately called "The Raid" (2011) or "The Raid 1" if it hadn't conflicted with another movie of the same name. It's the first movie of the franchise that saw 2014's "The Raid 2".

It's an Indonesian-made martial arts film that is of a modern style of hard-bitten "brutal" fighting like those from Jason Statham and others. The style used is Pencak Silat; the indigenous fighting style of Indonesia. Action-packed story about a police SWAT force that's trapped in a high rise during a raid on a criminal stronghold. Enough story to stitch together the fight scenes. Enough fight scenes not to ever get boring.

If you're a fan of the genre, then this is a roller coaster ride of action.

Saw Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes yesterday.  A decent popcorn flick at matinee prices.

300 Rise of an Empire.  Very comicbookish- but I knew that going in.  Fun, BLOODY movie.
