Bring your own muscle and packing stuff

Man these things are beasts. I had "white glove" installation with the Samsung from B&H Photo when it was new (75" edge-lit LED). The new Sony X95(something) is direct matrix LED (but hard to tell the difference much of the time). Had to have my brother help me move them around because they are about 90# and awkward/fragile.

Bottom line is it fixed one issue I was just starting to have (The Boys (S2) on Prime wouldn't play because of some HDMI security stuff that required updates to certified high speed HDMI cables (and still didn't fix it). The TV hasn't gotten an update from Samsung in several years so there won't be a fix coming. It was just the one show but it will only get worse. Best to sell it now what it still have some value. MSRP was something like $6k but I got it on a black Friday discount of under $2k. Sold yesterday for $770.

The Sony, once in place, fixed the Prime streaming issue. Sure enough spec changes in the HDMI code require updates, people. Because of the stand differences (Samsung is a center-mounted base stand and the Sony is 2 "feet" on either side. That means my current shelving isn't wide enough anymore.  ANOTHER expense (flat pack furniture time).

Went up to visit these three monkey butts, my grandson turned 9 so we took them out for lunch and pressies. Really fun day, it's a 5 hour round trip so I don't see them as much as I'd like to.. (sniff)

Yesterday I was standing at the kitchen sink when I heard the neighbor and his toddler son outside talking. It was so clear that I knew they had to be standing between our houses so I opened the blind a little more to see. Sure enough, right outside the window.

I slowly angled the blinds closed a little and, in a deep voice, said, "HO HO HO! Have you been a good boy for Santa this year?"

I heard his dad ask, "Did you hear that?"

In an small, amazed voice, I heard the toddler reply, "Yes..."

"Who was it?"
"Santa!"
"And have you been a good boy?"
"Yes..."

... And so on. I slowly opened the blind where the dad could see me but the boy couldn't. As I smiled and waved, he smiled and gave a slight nod. My day was made.

Took a pre-driving age niece Christmas shopping for her fam under the pretext of taking her to use a gift card she'd received for her b-day.  The presents are now hidden at our house, and I'll wrap them for her as well.

This scenario may be repeated with some of the other younger kiddos.  Probably need to use a different ruse each time.

This happens so rarely that it deserves mention.  I saw a performance car actually being driven in a performance manner.

I had just dropped my bro-in-law at the airport and was driving home on the interstate through downtown Milwaukee when a white BMW came zipping up fast from behind, utilizing all four lanes.  I was cruising much faster than my friends in law enforcement may like in the far left lane, and the Bimmer swooped by and was gone.  Usually, my little Civic passes any and every performance car--Porsche, Audi, BMW, M-B, what have you--because they're typically owned by folks who only want the name and associated prestige.

This seems to happen less than once a quarter.

I commuted. What a weird concept.

My students needed to drop off their lab kits, so I sat by the front door of the building in which I normally teach for 3 hours waiting for students to arrive with ziploc baggies full of exotic materials in hand.

Day #3 of sitting on my ass or just sleeping, I did get out of the house long enough to get a q-tip shoved from my nose to the back of my head, and back home to rest.

Over the last week I converted most of the fluorescent lights on the un-insulated side of the barn to LED tubes, all of which I got free.  It's CRAZY bright in there now, using FAR less electricity, and hopefully I won't need to touch them for a long time.

Smoked duck breasts.  Marinated, covered in bacon, and smoked to about 140.  VERY tasty.

Also started a Chuck roast in the SOus Vide yesterday- seared it and had it for supper along with the duck.

I’m tearing apart my microwave. The exhaust hood/fan is shite. It might work if I can reroute the duct up the backside thereby bypassing ridiculous 90 degree bends inside.
Who designs this stuff?

Digitised more old 35mm slides. The earliest date back to 1957. Mostly Calcutta, Singapore, Malaya and Hong Kong, with some UK pics. The slides of late 1950s Nepal seem to have gone missing, along with most of the HK slides. Might post a few of general interest on here later.

So pleased with my lockdown coping skills!
I completed three separate trips
down the driveway to the street.
One each for paper, recycling, and trash.

Clothes dryer went out Sunday. Crawled around in the attic on Monday and chimney swept the exhaust duct (out of the roof) and swapped one of the light bulbs in the far end of the attic.  No love. Cut power, pulled the fascia and the heater coil failed continuity checks. Called American Appliance Parts and they had it and the 2 sensors for me by 3pm. Everything swapped, tested, and buttoned up in about 30 minutes after getting home.

Things dry a LOT fast now.

I think I found the reason for the open circuit...

Yep. the assembly is locked in place by a metal "tube" that bolts around it to channel air over the coils and into the tub. It was split in half from the heat-over-time; not me removing it.

I remained a voice of reason in a world gone crazy.

Quote
Given the actions of the past 2 weeks, I think legislators that have been the the eye of the divisive-politics storm got an wake-up notice about what happens when your plan of pitting The People against each other actually bears fruit.

Your gated communities and sequestered office spaces become no safer then those you claim you’re different from; that you smiled about and blew off when it wasn’t your city burning and it was your “dogs of war” doing the burning.

There will be a time when it all spills over on everyone; even those who got comfortable using it to keep The People distracted from what their legilsators were actually doing.

I suspect they thought that anarchy could be controlled and they could focus it against their enemies. Like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, “Life doesn’t work that way.”

Before we retired and before our doggo became ill, we'd decided that he'd be our last pet for several years, or even decades, so we'd have an easier time traveling.  Over the past few days I've cleaned and laundered his bedding, packed up his stuff and leftover food and treats, and donated it to the Humane Society. And I've been doing a thorough cleaning at the ole homestead since he'd lost his house training due to illness.  I had cleaned up right away, but I'm now doing a corner-to-corner clean and polish of the wood floors in every room.

Still feels weirdly empty around here.   :-\

Got the rest of the big ole woodpile split yesterday.  Now on to stacking.  I hate stacking wood.  Stems from childhood when it was used as punishment.  Oh well.  Now it's what results in a monthly electric bill of about 50 bucks.  :)  Also emptied the hot water heater and refilled it.

Why do you need to heat hot water? ;)

Got 6 led shop lights for the barn. A buddy bought too many for his shop project. I originally had 4-4' florescent tubes running up the middle of the barn. Now have two rows of 3 and will move two old ones to the ends to make them 4 per row. Man are these things bright.  8) I have one row screwed to the bottom of the trusses and another on top of the trusses. The light out put is about the same but the ones above don't seem to blind you like the lower ones. I'll give it a bit of time and see which ones I like better and make them all the same.

I found out I have a few more skin cancers to be removed so that's not much fun. A combination of Lilly White Northern European skin and laying out in the sun as a yoot.

Still Judith made a killer spaghetti with zucchini and we gargled a delightful bottle of Bogle old vine Zin so it wasn't all gloom and doom.

Stood our clothes dryer on its head yesterday evening.

New 'sound' led me to uninstall, minor disassembly, clean and reinstall. Per the wife, a missing aglet from a hoodie was likely the culprit, but wasn't able to find it. Rather than doing full tear down to find one small piece of metal that was likely jammed in the drum mechanism (and lightly scraping on each revolution), I just turned the unit on back, right side, left side and top, turning the drum by hand forwards and backwards. Must have dislodged the noisemaker, since it's dead silent again now and works fine still.

I went skiing at the local hill (Seven Springs, PA). My bad leg worked OK. Nice to know I can still ski. Not sure about telemark turns for the future, but parallel worked fine.

Mine has "paddles" in the drum to stir up clothes while spinning. Those can be unbolted and sometimes the flotsam from pockets can be found in one of those.

Last week I swapped the heating element that even the carrier plate for the coil was broken in half (heat fatigue). Then climbed into the attic to "chimney swept" the exhaust duct.  Much improved over the 5-hour fluff dry it did the last time when I knew the element was dead.

sick and tired of the dullness of pop up ads, I have started googling Rolex and Rolls Royce. A noticeable improvement.

Went to my brothers house and trouble-shot his LAN. One issue is a headless PC for stand-alone background tasks. Win10 did an update and set there waiting for questions to be answered about the account that had already been answered when first set up. The end result? Sitting there, dead after a reboot, waiting for input that you can't do using RD because it's not past the boot process.  Once again Windows snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Went for a little drive in the woods and did a little shooting. Unfortunate due to the lack of availability ammo had to be restricted to 50 rounds each of 9mm and .40 and 100 rounds of .223, but it was still an enjoyable afternoon.  It either needs to snow so I can ski or warm up so I can ride  >:(

The PO of Chateau Baxter had a pendant light hanging in front of the basement fridge. It wasn't in a good place to put a pub table or anything under it, and as near we can guess, it was just for light in the bar area when the main lights weren't on.  Taller people had to duck when getting a beer or pop.  It was ridiculous.

I replaced it with a flush mount led unit which can easily serve the "nightlight" function and which won't hit my 6+ foot tall nephew in the head.
