Podcasts/Netcasts- the best of them by topic.
« on: November 17, 2013, 03:47:08 PM »
Copied- you know, just in case...

All:  I have become a huge podcast fan since giving up the Sirius radio.  I figured we could use a library of vouched for podcasts about all things.  List your favorites and how they should be categorized (humor, horror, science commentary, etc), and I'll try to sort them topically and list them on this first post.  This might be a cool resource for us listeners to discover new podcasts.  I'll start with a few that I listen to or have listened to; post up your own.

So I've listened to a few NightVale and No Sleep podcasts.  Interesting.  Nightvale is a bit weird- a "live" radio show where weird stuff happens.  No Sleep is better if you like stories. There have been a couple really good ones.

General Entertainment:

The Mike O'Meara Show: Daily 79-minute podcast (M-F) that touches on pop culture, news-of-the-day, and includes a daily audio vault. If you ever listened to Don & Mike in syndication...this is Mike, with Robb Spewak and Oscar Santana. http://mikeomearashow.com/

Big O & Dukes: Weekly podcast (recorded Tuesday night)...basically guys sitting around drinking beer, talking about stuff, ragging on each other. Once a quarter or so, their show is a seasonal beer review show. Their winter brew show just dropped this week. Big O & Dukes were on terrestrial radio in both Phoenix and Baltimore/DC prior to going online. Dukes is still on the air in DC in the afternoons doing sports talk with Lavar Arrington and Big O is Oscar Santana on TMOS mentioned above. There are several off-shoots of BOAD, such as Rally the Horde and the Hogcast (beer & BBQ podcast). http://bigoanddukes.com/

I used to make a bigger impression.

My podcast consumption has dropped WAY off now that my commute to work is ~7 minutes. :\

I can't do my work while listening to podcasts. There's something about listening to spoken word (vs. music) that takes me right out of the zone.

Out of the listening to podcast zone or work zone?

it takes me right out of the work zone. I don't have that kind of multitasking. Music is no problem, but not spoken word.

replace the previously-recommended Tekzilla with Tekthing. Zilla was dropped by Rev3 and those people went off and launched Tekthing.

I watched TNT for probably 6 or 8 weeks after Merritt got canned but the new host and format didn't  hold my interest. I've since jumped ship to Tom's DTNS.

A Cast of Kings

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cast-kings-game-thrones-podcast/id515836681?mt=2

The best GoT podcast I've found. There are 2 hosts. One has read all of the books, the other has read none of them. It's interesting to hear the 2 different points of view. I don't agree with all of their analysis but I enjoy the discussion.

I have listened to a couple, but they can be deeply disturbing.

Short sci-fi serial:
The Message (by GE Podcast Theater)

8 episodes, most about 15 minutes.

Each episode is the weekly podcast of Nicky Tomalin, as she follows a team of cryptologists trying to decipher the first message determined to be from outer space. It's really fun and perfect for when you're driving around on short errands.

So I have been listening to the Risk! True Tales Boldly Told Podcast. Best of number #10 was the first one I heard. Wow, some very powerful stories. Warning: if you are emotional, are sensitive to triggers, and people talking about their experiences with alternative lifestyles (the show is call Risk!, after all- so sex stuff will be talked about) then move on to something else.

#10 featured a girl who gave her kidney to a stranger, a guy who sold drugs until he made a mistake and was tortured by the drug cartel, and a cop who worked the human traffic division for 17 years. Powerful stories, emotional rollercoasters. Listen at your own risk.

It is a much more raw version of the Mortified Podcast, where people read from their diaries as a kid in front of an audience (usually comedians).

Also giving the Aubrey Marcus podcast a listen-some interesting stuff for the open minded.
