Rocket Launch Tonight
« on: November 19, 2013, 04:40:13 PM »
Quote
A rocket could streak through the sky tonight in Maryland and for hundreds of miles across the eastern U.S. as NASA launches a mission from the Delmarva peninsula.

An Air Force Minotaur I rocket is scheduled to lift off between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The launch is performing various tests as part of the Air Force's Operationally Responsive Space Office's ORS-3 mission deploying satellites in space.
The launch timing depends on weather and atmospheric conditions. Backup launch days run through Nov. 26.

It will be visible as far west as Indiana, north to Maine and Canada, and south to northern Florida. A map of launch visibility can be found here.

Launch status can be followed on launch day on Twitter and Facebook. You can also watch it online via a live webcast that starts at 6:30 p.m.

The launch could come a day after NASA launched an unmanned rocket bound for Mars, from Cape Canaveral, Fla. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission, or MAVEN, will be observing characteristics of the Martian atmosphere and solar radiation's effects on it.

Neat-o.  Those Minotaur rockets are repurposed Peacekeeper missiles.

Vandy doesn't announce them beforehand, or do they go public nowadays?

Then I realized what I probably would have thought if I'd seen that without any prior warning...
