Going To Denver In May
« on: January 25, 2015, 07:16:40 PM »
I will be at the Denver Airport in May for training. I plan to drive out from Missouri on Thursday and ride Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday. I'm thinking of making Estes Park my base camp for those days unless someone else has a better suggestion. I'd like to ride two day routes that are around 100 miles each day as I like to take it easy with a lot of time for taking pictures.

Rocky Mountain National Park celebrates it's 100th Anniversary today or tomorrow. Since it's snowed in (a fair bit) now, the big celebration is some time this summer. FYI with your Estes Park base...

You might know of my roads of note map & corresponding text file. They might help with selection of routes / roads.

I'm trying to think if Trail Ridge Road (up and over the mountain, in RMNP) will be open by then. These sites are listing a "Maybe" of May 22 opening:

Some "just opened" photos:

Might Dillon / Silverthorn be more centrally located for 100 mile routes for your trip's base? Up at Estes, if Trail Ridge Road is closed, your routes for rides are east (30 minutes) to the plains (Loveland or Lyons) then north to CO-14 northwest of Fort Collins and over to Walden CO then south or southwest to Grand CO or Steamboat Springs. Or you're heading south to I-70 via a plains route or via the slower and scenic Peak to Peak Highway (radar alert) and heading west into the mountains.  If you were in Dillon / Silverthorn you could plan a day north or plan a day south or plan a day west for some larger loops.

If you wish to meet for lunch or dinner - the invitation is open. Perhaps a group thing with those who are local.

Should you wish either a 3/4 day or short day on a jeep trail - that can easily be arranged - though many of the high / above timberline trails with grand views will still be snowed in.

Thanks Jim... that's some great information. I'd love to get together with some of the other riders in the area. I'm open for anything, but Sunday May 17th would probably be the best.

I just assumed he was giving you an address to one of the many MJ outlets.
