1980 Honda CX500D Build
« on: December 28, 2014, 04:53:22 PM »
New to this forum.

Here's my 1980 Honda CX500D build. Finished it earlier this year. Installed ceramic coated aftermarket 2 into 1 exhaust system, Ignitech Ignition, Hotwing Glass seat pan, seat pad, and front fender. Had Hotwing Glass to make fiberglass flat side panels with cutouts for K&N pod air filters. Powder coated frame and had a friend to paint the pan, tank, side panels, radiator guard, and front fender with pearl white paint and painted pin stripes. Installed Ducatic electric fan and made an electric fan switch & 7V regulator for the temp gauge.  Progressive fork springs, Hagon rear shocks, and LED turn signals with LED voltage indicator installed.

Current project, Ninja 250 Cafe Racer.

Battery & regulator tray placed where original air box was located:

That's a nice looking CX.

This is how my CX looked when I got it:

Was going to build a Cafe Racer, but when I saw a GL1000 with the Street Tracker seat pan, that made my mind up. Modified a Hotwing Glass "Darkwing" seat pan to fit the CX:

Thanks for the Welcome from everyone!

Love to ride twisties & build bikes!

My CX originally had a fan driven on the front end of the cam. Removed the original fan & installed Ducati electric fan.  Copied one of the CX builder's idea on making a electric fan switch that threads into the radiator drain out of a magnetic plug:

Very nice! Love the CX's! I rode a couple of CX650 Eurosports for many years. I still have the remains of my crashed one, and a 650 Silverwing. I think one of them will end up as a scrambler. I was originally going to build a cafe bike out of the Eurosport, but I ended up with a V11 LeMans instead.
Do you know what your bike weights now? I planned to fabricate some aluminum engine hangers, and swap to an aluminum sportbike rad ( I have one from a GSXR 600) to get rid of that car sized behemoth on the CX. I would like to get much closer to 400 pounds.

Thanks,

Weighed it with 2/3rd tank of gas. Removed the center stand to help with weight savings. The low weight surprised me for a shaft drive bike. Lift it with front triple tree paddock stand and only takes 30 seconds to install center stand to lift for maintenance:
