One Picture, One Story. Rebooted!

Miles and I were out in Death Valley.  For those of you who have followed the history of us riding there you know that Death Valley often lives up to its name with us.  I think we have a 30% failure rate there...

This was one of those days.  My beautiful Ducati Monster 1100EVO decided she wanted to digest a rock to the crankcase in about the worst possible spot.  After dropping 4 quarts of oil and turning DV into a hazmat site we proceeded to hitch up Ol' Nellie and go for a ride.

About 90 miles worth of riding with a thin clothesline rope stretched between us.   :o

Good Times!

Heading home after the 2007 WCRM Mr. Smoothie caught up to my son Devin and I on Hwy 36.  We decided to ride along with Nathan so he led the way up the western side of 36 taking every passing opportunity to get past every vehicle we came upon.  As we all know, there are very few dotted lines on that road.  All three of us, with much gusto, blew past this Toyota truck, crossing the double yellows to do so.  A few miles up the road we stopped alongside the road for a nature break and the guy stopped to have a "Chat" with us.  He literally jumped out of his truck, his face drawn in an angry expression, both fists tightly clenched - FULL anger in every aspect of his body language!  But...  he was only high on drugs, LOL.  All he wanted to do was tell us about the pot he was growing nearby and that the region was much better than the area in Oregon where he was from.

The pic shows a not-so-excited-about-this-conversation Mr. Smoothie being cornered by the guy, as my son and I snuck off to snicker and laugh!

Good Times!

Sprint ST. The Ghost of St. Lucas appears with a "dead" solenoid. Nearest Triumph parts store....Las Vegas.
Sean whacked it a couple of times with a hammer and it never failed during the rest of the trip.

A seven hundred mile day, riding through the southern Sierras with Viffer Vern.  We were riding over Sherman Pass, and I was running a bit low on gas.  I was concerned, but there had been nowhere to refuel for a very long time.

The BMW has a mileage countdown clock that activates once you get the the last gallon or so.  I had no idea how accurate it might have been- after all, I once went twenty miles past the point my old K12R counted down to zero.

Passing Kennedy Meadows heading eastbound, the clock kept counting down, and I kept watching it.  Getting more and more nervous as it approached zero, I took some comfort in knowing that the pass was not far up the road at tall.

Well, when it hit zero, the bike stalled and died.  At that precise moment.  I used what momentum I had and Flintstoned it a bit cresting over the top of the rise, then coasted the next nine miles (Down Nine Mile Road) to Highway 395.  When I say "coasted" it hardly describes it.  There were times when I hit 75 MPH on that downhill.

Oddly enough, I actually like that highway. I've been on it a half dozen times both ways. But I'm not a fan of the Ely/Delta leg. Specifically western Utah. Pretty enough if you can handle the heat.

I found out I had a lot of friends on this day.

The day of the most unplugable hole.

I ran over a stick (yes a piece of frecking wood) in Renovo, PA (BFE defined).  There were a lot of kind folks (both known and unknown) supporting me back at base camp working on getting a replacement tire and working on a back-yard engineering way to plug it.

We were not able to find a replacement and I took a long ride home with three ropes barely hanging on.  The tire blew out in spectacular fashion in a high speed sweeper.  At least I know I won't always freak out and overreact in such a situation.  I eventually had the bike towed home via a neighbor's truck.

Took advantage of a rare day off mid-week. Rode from Sac through Lake Berryessa, over to Middletown, Hopland Grade, gas in Cloverdale. Out and back to the bridge on Skaggs Springs Rd, through the Anderson Valley, Silverado Trail on the East side of Napa Valley, then back through Lake Berryessa before catching the commute traffic in Davis for the final push home.

A little over 360 miles, and the rear tire is looking like its only good for a couple more rides now..

Friends...don't let friends side-swipe oncoming cars in a tunnel....

Our "Tail-end Charlie" sideswiped a Honda last week while passing through the tunnel at the entrance to Mesa Verda National Park just outside of Cortez, CO. He was banged up some, bruises here and there, but his Multistrada took the brunt of it. Thankfully, we were able to get him patched up to finish the trip.

Actually, I'll bet Harry's wife caused more damage than the Honda when she found out about the crash.

Inspired by R Doug's "America's Stelio" thread, BMW-K and I set out to do some riding in the southern Sierras.  This photo was taken on the western side of Sherman Pass.  Look at the fire-killed trees- that fire rolled through six years ago, IIRC.  Interestingly, we rode over Sherman Pass soon after that fire was put out, but there was still quite a bit of smoke and ash.  I looked for any photos, but I couldn't find any.

2K round trip from Philadelphia to Fernandina Beach, FL to take this picture of my bike and boat in the same place.
Boat got fixed (new motor), bike got broke (ABS failure 600 miles from home). Going back to the boat. By car.

Tiger Point Marina - where 14th St. (or whatever it's called by then) crosses Egans Creek. They did an re-power job for us. The old motor basically died from overheating, probably brought on by a cracked head.

In a car magazine article R Doug read about a road the writers referred to as "America's Stelvio" but they didn't give the road's name or precise location.  He started a thread asking for some of us Californians to check out some possible contenders, so I asked BMW-K (who now once again owns a BMW K bike for the first time in years) if he wanted to go exploring with me.

We took off after work on a Friday and stayed in Lone Pine for the night, then rode a number of excellent dead-end roads in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains looking for R Doug's road.

We found it, and it was good riding, but so were a lot of other roads in the area...

Anyhow, this pic is on 395 North on the Friday before the actual exploration.

Last October I planned on a nice day ride through the Castkills to see the foliage. I was going to go with a friend from work, but he ended up not being able to make it. The day before, at the last minute, my neighbor was talking to my wife and asked to come along. So the two of us headed off the next morning for the mountains. The weather was a little cool, but not cold enough for heated gear, and it was cloudy, but it was still a great of riding.  :)

My second visit to the glories of Utah. This trip was rather snake-bit: began by meeting friends in Santa Fe and riding loops from that base, during which my beloved Canon managed to wiggle free from the tank bag, never to be seen again. Thus the first half of the trip is sadly picture-less. Then, wildfires in NM and AZ necessitated frequent re-routing due to smoke and road closures.

This was taken -I believe- in Canyonlands NP, a day trip from my base in Moab.

(*all via text...)

me:  "Sooo, you haven't done an SS1k on that bike yet, have you?"
miles:  "No.  If I did I think it would be the first one on the IBA list."
me:  "We need to fix that."
miles:  "What are you doing next weekend?"

Every year we try to plan a ride called the Phrostbite sometime around the first week of February.  It started some 10 years ago as a trip to Death Valley in February (hey, we gotta ride and it's supposed to hold the record for Hottest Place on Earth).  Turns out, it's a bit chilly in DV in winter.  That became the first Phrostbite and I think temps hit 30f or so.  We froze our asses off.

So, it's Phrostbite time and the only two who can make the calendar are miles and I.  The die was cast...it would be SoCal to Phoenix via Las Vegas, Zion and the Grand Canyon with the added twist of trying to surprise Rusty for dinner at 8pm at JoyTaco.

I'd love to spin this into a blow by blow detailed ride report but I fear that I might be lynched before I manage to finish the ride report that only took 20 hours to complete.   ;D

It was a 3am-ish start omen'd by my GS sputtering a dead battery in the driveway.  We saw a low of 26 degrees in Joshua Tree, a high of 63 just outside Phoenix at 7pm and an average in low 40's all day.  Miles tried to run out of gas (caused mostly by mapping challenges) creating a 16 mile or so backtrack.  We called an audible mid-ride and waived off Jerome and Prescott after we saw the road conditions in Flagstaff (snow on all sides, sparkling pretty but clear roads...at 4:30pm) and decided to boogie straight to Phoenix and add distance in the safety of known warmer conditions.  We made dinner at 7:45pm only to find that we were at the other JoyTaco.  This forced another backtrack but at least this time the mileage was claimable.  A dead head run at 10pm to some unknown town at the far edge of the universe that had a Chevron (needed the receipt) and a no-tell motel ( :hurl:) had us back in Phoenix by 11:46pm MST for the official last receipt and witness forms.

Our Sena's died at 11 hours and 11:45 hours of use respectively.  I tried to lose mine by bonking it off my helmet but was saved completely by luck as I'd plugged it into my spare battery USB charger and it was now flopping around on my back connected by its mini-usb plug.  Good save there as miles came up behind me to pluck it to safety.

In other news I found that with e-Jacket on full, grips on full, high beams and Baja Squadrons on full I can draw my voltage down to 12.1.   :wow:

Phoenix greeted us with heated gear blazing away on a 63 degree night.  Yes, long distance riding tends to do things to the body and heat regulation is one of the first things to go.  I had my Warm & Safe on "1" on the heat-troller while miles just left his Kanetsu on "nuke" all day.  Fair cat be called, miles was riding an unfaired S1000r and I was on the GS with it's fairing.

So the unofficial mileage is around 1100 in 20 hours.  Official mileage should be close to 1060.

Ok, so this is supposed to be "One Picture, One Story".  I will leave you with one extra pic...

Well done, sirs.
Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Bravo!
