Christmas Decorations-when?
« on: November 16, 2013, 09:46:40 PM »
I stuck three LED branches in the ground today and plugged them in. It seems early to me, but the day has been cold and snowy, and it filled my heart with joy. And I drank liquor, which may have helped.

For my office and house, I was thinking of the major decorations on Dec 1, which is also the day Xmas tunes start for me.

I wait 'til a week, week & a half before xmas to turn on the lights.

But post-xmas, I'd like everyone to leave 'em on 'til spring. :bigok:

The multicoloured LED lights hung around our living room & kitchen are turned on in the evening, 365 days a year (mornings over breakfast too, in the dark months).

*Other* lights and decorations are not allowed until after the 8th of December, ZED's birthday. :D

Never.  Unfortunate byproduct of the SO feeling shortchanged with a December birthday and my tiring of regifts for birthday presents in January. :P

We put up the outside lights the week after Thanksgiving - inside stuff about 2 weeks before. New Years Day it all goes away.

Mid December, no earlier.  In fact, I generally prefer it to happen the last weekend before Christmas.

One year the (artificial) tree stayed up until June or July. I really should have changed out the decorations each month.

Stromgal takes issue with my Christmas views.

As for decorations (lights. Period. No blow up/plastic anything - die die die)

Leave your lights up all year round. Who cares. Turn them on anytime after the last bit of Thanksgiving turkey has been consumed. Turn them off at the conclusion of the twelve days.

Turn them on occasionally during the brutal summer heat to remind yourself and your neighbors that relief is in the future.

Same here, though it's procrastination rather than preference. Take 'em down ASAP after New Year's Day.

I put a string a lights along the front gutter of the house yesterday, verified they work, and unplugged them. We will turn them on after Thanksgiving. The tree will be put up and the inside of the house decorated by the first weekend of Dec (keeping the wife happy). It all comes down the first weekend after New Years.

Beats me. I got it from my parents when they quit decorating. I drag it out because it's the absolute least I can do that still qualifies as decorating for Christmas. Oddly, I never win the neighborhood decorating contest. Must be my snarky, dickish, plastic Santa display. Either that or the folks who judge the contest are not minimalists.

I hung the lights Nov 10th because the weather was cooperating and I didn't have anything a lot better to do. I won't turn them on until after we eat a big fat turkey.

Inside decorations usually go up right after thanksgiving. We still have some holloween stuff out, but my wife says they are "fall decorations".  Whatever.

Christmas decorations are usually put away Dec 27th or 28th. The holiday itself is over and I want to reclaim the space.

Canadians have our T-Giving in October, so we have nothing after Nov 11. Most neighbors have the weather-dependant stuff up now, but many do not turn on lights until December hits.

We also have an house with 4 inflatables: Charlie Brown skating, Snoopy in an airplane with moving propeller (quite elaborate, even I will admit), a snowman and Santa Claus. Santa fell in the wind on Sunday, and his face was in the snowman's crotch, it made me chortle, since I apparently am a 13 year old boy...

well, we just put up most of our indoor holiday stuff to include the tree, yesterday. the outside lights go up after T-giving and NO earlier. I don't care how bad the weather is because i grew up in the WI tundra and love the winter outdoors. My wife keeps trying to push me to do it when the weather is nice, but I am standing my ground with waiting til after Thanksgiving.  just something I do.

outside lights go up after thanksgiving, when all the 35+ days are weekdays ;-}

The tire-wreath will be strung with lights, this year -- many failed last winter.
We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Speaking of decorations. We came across these mini Christmas trees in basically planter pots in several spots now and the wife wanted a couple. Asking price is between $79 and $150....   I looked at it for a second and said that those could easily be built for $40 or less. She snapped a pic of one and off to Home Depot we went. We have about $40 into what you see below and ours has lights. She did a pretty good job.  :bigok:

Never put up decorations until previous holiday is over. I put up my g'maws old school painted lights between sunday after thanksgiving and first weekend in dec. They are sentimental to me so I take my time not to break them. They come down within a week after christmas. Minimal yard decorations but the christmas tree always goes in a window unless the living room is in the back of the house. Christmas music doesn't start at work until december but Christmas Vacation can be watched all year long!
