What's the bar serving tonight?

The rye IPA turned out pretty good.  Still lots of hops, but an earthier selection with malts that aren't so zingy. Better for drinking in fall.

Sitting here in Mexico, on our Sun Deck sipping Champagne.  Watched the sun set a while ago.  It's getting dark.  I have those too-much-champange-on-an-empty stomach wobbles.  All is good.

Started with a smoked wheat beer made by one of my cow-orkers. Now I'm into his pear/apple cider brewed with saison yeast.

He's got some great brewing chops. Good stuff.
If it weren't for the therapeutic properties of the occasional off-camber decreasing radius downhill right-hander I'd almost certainly go completely sane.

The saison yeast is a great idea- I've been using Nottingham for my cider but I'm gonna try that next.

I love me some Devil's Backbone beers!  I can't wait until I get their products in here in NC.

Speaking of being able to get stuff in NC, I found an online retailer which sells whiskeys not found in our so-so ABC stores.

So, today I ordered me a bottle of Whistlepig 10 year Rye distilled (and aged) in Vermont.  I can't wait to try it!

Brother in law asked me to make him a 'real hoppy' beer and I'm trying it out tonight from bottling.

I met the Whistlepig folks a few years back in Stowe. Outstanding whiskey. You will love this - worth every penny!

When making a beer for friends, I always make a seven pack with an extra for sampling prior to giving away.

Had a request for a peach cobbler beer- biscuit and caramel mixed with peaches baked in brown sugar. Turned out as intended- a bit of fruit but not sweet, a lot of baked cookie taste without the heaviness.

It arrived today!

That does NOT taste like a 100 proof rye, which is good.  There's no doubt it's a rye.  But, it's not as hot and is more mellow than less aged ryes, especially this potent (50% alcohol).  Its initial taste is crisp without a big punch of grain.  The heat is manageable and the follow is pure rye.

You're right, I love it.

Blind taste test. Sheri poured me three similarly priced bourbons from three different distilleries (Willett, Buffalo Trace, and Heaven Hill).

FWIW, my favorites are in the following order:  Even Williams Single Barrel, Willett, and Eagle Rare.

Passed on a small doe and two small bucks this morning.  Now I'm working in the barn- various brews (this is an Ommegang Brewery Hennipin) along with a nice Fuente.  I whisky-soaked it myself, and I think I will do more.
I'm dissembling a grader blade I made for my garden tractor.  It just didn't work very good at all- no down pressure on the deck hangers.  I hate taking stuff apart I have built, but like Edison, I guess I learn every time...

Nice theme.  Slainte!

Last night, a co-worker and his girlfriend had us over for dinner.  He's a whiskey drinker so we purchased him a tasty spirit made and aged in West Virginia.

In addition, I got to try some some of the good stuff in his collection:  Elijah Craig 18, Pappy 20, and JW Blue Label.  Sheri drove home.  :)

We couldn't find the ingredients on Alameda for an old fashioned so the SO decided to make homemade eggnog from combining a couple recipes and they turned out delicious. Only bad part was running out of milk!

By request here is our Eggnog recipe...from scratch...

Almond coconut milk to taste
2.5 shots of Captain
one egg yolk
2 tsp of honey
1-2 Tbsp of brown sugar
ground nutmeg
ground cinnamon
stick of cinnamon

The recipe says to heat the milk and then add the egg and serve warm but we actually preferred to have it chilled so we strained it and added the cinnamon stick. They were delicious.
A straight road never made a skilled rider.
