Ironically, the reason it is rusted out is that the parts in his Mexican-made Jetta somehow came from Germany, where they don't get coated against salt. Those parts were supposed to be made in Mexico, where they DO get coated for the salt. Again,

The Milwaukee forecast is for 1 to 3 inches of snow overnight. But back in the 40s F by the close of the week. So maybe I'll get a January ride. But I think I'll have to be careful for ice in shady areas. And I'm not so sure about getting out before the salt gets washed away or worn off.

The last of the snow piled by the plows has melted in my neighborhood, and there was a warm gentle rain all day to dissolve any remaining road salt. I'm certain that the commercial parking lot piles still need to melt. But the sump pump working implies that the frost is out of the ground around my house already.

Summer has been mild here. We usually get a month or more of 100º+ days. This year has seen some of those but it's had a hard time stringing days-in-a-row of them. When the 2 recent Gulf storms' leading fronts moved through, we dropped 20º in a matter of minutes.

Also more rain in the Spring than usual.

No meaningful snow yet, but it's coming. Highs around Milwaukee will be in the upper 40's F this week, but will be barely scratching the freezing point next week.

Time to be wary of frost and black ice. And once the roads have frozen, even nice air temps will keep the risk of slippery conditions in shaded or low lying spots. My season will likely be coming to a close soon.

Rain turned to snow here in Milwaukee. Pretty with big fluffy snowflakes and a stiff wind. Temps next week will struggle to get above freezing, so the roads will be cold soon.

Safe riding days may still happen, but the likelihood is quickly waning.

Milwaukee went from no snow to about 5 or 6 inches overnight. The ground is frozen and the predicted temps look like it'll be here for a long while.

It's covered the trees and roofs, looks pretty in the predawn twilight. Especially since my condo assn.'s contractor had already plowed the driveways!

We had a couple inches yesterday followed by freezing rain, then it all changed to rain and liquid. Barely anything left on the ground. Today, it's right at 32* and sunny. Feels practically balmy outside.

BTDT, finally let retirement win.

Play golf a couple times a week, putz around the yard and generally doing what I damn well feel like or not. You've got a couple decent courses out that way. Me and the sons played Whispering Pines near Pinckey in November for their Veterans Memorial Scramble and loved it.

Now that I've got a Jeep Liberty 4x4 in process of being put back to reliable, I'm thinking some wheeling trips up to the UP and down towards Tellico Plains are on the radar too. Either camping or hauling a small modified pop up camper (to be found and finished out).

I remember this pattern well from growing up in Chicago. Just enough warmth in the daytime to get a wet sheen on the roads, dipping below freezing in time for the evening commute. And ice in the mornings. North Dakota was better for winter driving in a way. The temps dropped below freezing typically in October or November and stayed there until late March or April. For most of the time, the roads stayed clear once plowed and there wasn't any ice.

Don't forget WV. If there's a Canaan Valley trip this year, you could drag the DS bike out and have a blast on the bike and in the Jeep on the FS roads for days.

I relate. I grew up in Minnesota - and learned to drive there. Still prefer rwd in winter.
Then was USAF... Missouri was pretty nice. Oklahoma was mostly cold mud - just above freezing. Any ice shut everything down. I got back from leave (vacation) one winter and felt I had driven into an apocalypse scene. Okinawa Japan was (is) a semi-tropical island. Hard to get into the Xmas spirit. But funny to see guys walking around in parkas and shorts - parka from their previous base and shorts because after you're there a while, you think 50's/60s are 'cold' and you don't own any civilian pants.
