Van camping road trip was Flip A Coin
« on: November 02, 2019, 08:09:57 AM »
Heads, I go east with the wife to Bloomsburg, PA for 5 days (weather forecast is meh), then head south towards Florida along the coast.  Barrier Islands aka Hatteras et al are out of play because of hurricane damage, closed to everyone but residents. Stops would be Norfolk, VA, Kure Beach, NC, Savannah, GA and Cocoa Beach, FL and lots of National Park stamp harvesting.

Tails, I run south for warmth.  First stop would be Hunt's Lodge in Tellico Plains, TN for a two nighter. Lake Park, GA for a week, then Cocoa Beach for a week.  That gets me to our reserved apartment in Pompano Beach for Thanksgiving week.

Either way, packing the van today for Sunday departure.  I'll be overnight van camping or setting up a cabin tent for the more long term stays in the stops along the way.

Return home date is uncertain at this point.  I -may- arrange an AirBnB for Christmas week and have the wife fly down to wherever it is.

Let me know if you get anywhere near Winchester VA. We have plenty of space for the van or tent or class A. Plus I owe you for the tank bag.

Thanks, y'all.  :inlove:  I think I'm gonna fly south and visit Jack & Lori in Tellico @ Hunt's Lodge for a couple days because weather is getting not so nice.  I really want to do the east coast properly, but the Barrier Islands being closed to visitors sure kills a bunch of why I wanna go that way.  The NC ferry system is currently designated for contractors and residents only because hurricane recovery is a justifiable priority.

Maybe next spring?  Got a whole passel of folks to visit out east from here.  The military campground system is a blessing for my travel plans.  Cheap, convenient and plenty of them.  A month from Madawaska, Maine to Key West, Florida sounds wonderful.

Does packing the van include bringing a bike?  Tellico Plains is looking very good.

Not at this time.  Eventually, there will be a bike hauler and a Suzuki DR350 on it.  It's torn apart and my roundtuit is back ordered.

And, wishy washy wandering me??  I left home and turned east in Ohio on the turnpike.  500 miles later, I'm sitting at the hotel with my wife in Bloomsburg, PA.     Thursday, the east coast adventure starts with a run to Dover AFB in Delaware.  Two national park stops on my to do list.  Mount Vernon is a must for me.  I gotta see George's place.  Wanted to go downtown Philly for Independence Hall, but parking and two dogs put the kibosh on that.

You'll be driving 2 minutes from my place.

Ok... hear me on this. Hear. Me.

When coming South, even if you don't have time for a meet up, do this... hear me on this... go to The Dog House on Rt. 13 / DuPont Highway in New Castle DE. It's kind of in the middle of where I-95, I-295, US-13, DE-1, and DE 141 all come together. Amazing foot long hot dogs and cheese steaks.

If not The Dog House, then a morning or lunch stop at Helen's Sausage House.

I gotta come back here in the real summer time.  Lots of nice campgrounds and plenty of awesome roads for a dual sport.  Might even take in a race.

Day 2 was more ambitious, but the weather interrupted me.  I got 9 before the showers started and headed back to the ranch.  If you want a hi-rez version for a desktop or something, ask.  I took the Fuji 20mp this trip.   ;D

*sigh*  Record cold for the east coast for the next three days.  32* in Dover, DE last night.  Tonight, we go just south to Fort Story east of Norfolk, VA with lows near freezing too.  At least it'll be in the low 50s when we get there.

Plan was to go to Kure Beach, NC for a couple days, but we're going to speed run past there and get to Fort Stewart's Holbrook Pond FamCamp just south of Savannah, GA for some warmth.  Poor pups were chilled last night even with a space heater running in the camper area. It just kept the chill from becoming cold. Glad I got water/electric sites for the next two stops!  You can feel the wind penetration in this thing when it's blowing over 20 knots.

It's not an adventure till things go sideways!   :snork:

Ended up putting the outside awning away at midnight because I was afraid it was going to come off with the high winds.  It was shaking and rattling quite loudly.   :o

While you're around here, you could head east / south-east to Assateague and check out the while horses.

Wussed our last night, got a cheap motel room and got the dogs washed up.  We stayed warm and well fed.

Left this morning intending on Savannah, GA for a few nights.  Messy accident on I95 near Florence, SC closing the freeway.  I detoured into Flo for lunch and made the snap call to head SE towards the coast a bit. Ended up at Lake Moultrie at another base campground with a near waterfront site!  I watched the sunset on the water.  Sweet!  Probably stay here another day or two.

Yup, this is a good stopping point.  We haz doggie beach, plenty of down firewood and a steady source of food at the camp store to go with the stocked can goods.  Tentative departure is now Tuesday.

Forecast for tomorrow is “arctic blast” here with record lows.  I’m moving further south to mid-Atlantic coastal Florida.  Highs of 80/lows of 65 for two weeks.

The adventures to date:

Great week in Bloomsburg, PA, saw a bunch of covered bridges and scenic countryside.

Froze my arse off in Dover, DE on a one night stopover.  Not impressed with the Dover FamCamp facilities.  It's literally a field next to the runway and a minimum of trees.

Didn't freeze said arse off in Portsmouth, VA because someone left the light on for me.

Four days of heaven at the Short Stay Military FamCamp outside of Charleston, SC

Seven whole days at KARS Park in Cape Canaveral, Titusville, Florida was nearly perfect.

Four days in the Hilton Boca Raton suffering from over pampering.   ;D

Picked up the wife at midnight last night and we're in the apartment for a week.

Takeaway?  The van is definitely ok for me and two dogs, but I need to invest in the add-a-room for bug prevention.  Averaging 24 mpg loaded for everything and anywhere.  The portable solar is working well.

Leaving here, I'm headed towards Tampa and MacDill AFB for a few nights in their dry camp area @$12/night.

From there, Escribano FWC's Bayou campground with just portapotties and bearproof trash cans.  Free!!! camping with a permit available online.

It’s a tough road but somebody’s got to do it...😎
My GPS just told me to turn left, then turn left, then turn left, then turn left.
So if I go too far left do I end up right?

Short story?  On the road again Wednesday!

Tomorrow's the end of the apartment rental.  We're back to the Hilton for a few days, then ship the wife to Seattle, WA & Soda Springs, Idaho for a couple weeks and I go west.  Far, far west.  First stop is Pensacola, FL for a couple nights visiting my younger sister.  Another 400 miles sees me in Houston to help get my kid squared away mentally and physically.  He really knows no one out there and phone calls just aren't the same.  A bare apartment with an air mattress and a folding table are just depressing living conditions.  Don't know how long I'll be there, but any east Texans on STO that want to meet up for lunch or dinner, we can do that.  I'm for sure thinking two weeks and maybe into January.

I'll help him scrounge up some decent used furniture and haul it with the van.  A small kitchen set, a used couch and some table lamps will surely improve things physically.  We're gonna spend some time visiting stuff and talking thru a few nagging things.

Last night, my wife and I took his GF and mom to Thanksgiving dinner at a local place to get them out too.  Mom's recently a widow and lost her mom right after that.  They needed someone to talk to and be pampered for a bit.  They're invited here today to chill and sit around the pool because sunshine is always an anti-depressant.

And a picture to close.  Dinner overlooking the Pompano Beach Golf Club at sunset.

Back out on the road with the van today.  North west bound towards Chiefland, FL.  Got a couple campgrounds located for a site with electric service.  Heater will be necessary tonight with a forecast low in the low 30s.

Tomorrow will see us in Pensacola for a couple nights based at the Naval Air Station to visit my sister Carol and her family.

Stopping at the Camping World in Tampa about lunchtime today and picking up a proper RV portable outdoor tv antenna.  It gets dark early and we’re indoors to avoid being eaten alive by the voracious Florida bugs.

Sitting in NAS Pensacola's military famcamp for a couple days.  Waterfront site with utilities.  Not much to do, so I've been pondering how well this layout has worked for me.  It's been ok, but space is a premium.  Need to condense and consolidate stuff.

I bought a real RV digital broadcast antenna for the tv in Tampa, need to add the cable passthru sitting in the garage.

-need a real refrigerator. 1.1cf in my shop will work under the bed
-needs a bar style sink and water holding tank
-modify the storage to have a slide out kitchen in the rear
-actual storage vs the rubbermaid totes outside
-insulation everywhere!!
-shrink the bed length and width, it's enough room for me and two dogs now.
-everything needs to conform to the contours of the walls better.
-actually wire outlets and USB ports for everything while on campsite power or solar.  Power strips are ok, but take up space.

I've got some ideas running circles in my head and all winter to work them out.  Time to get creative and expensive.  lol
