MOTORCYCLISTS are 23% safer behind the wheel of a car than non-motorcyclists, according to a leading insurer.

Equity Red Star compared car drivers to car users who also have an insured motorcycle, and found the latter 23% less likely on average to make a claim on their car policy.

The firm also adjusted the figures to take into account the different typical ages of car drivers and motorcyclists, and still found the riders to be 21% better behind the wheel. The results showed motorcyclists were 20% less likely to make a bodily injury claim on their car policy.

The insurer examined 200 million policies between 2007 and 2012.

Rob Clark, Equity Red Star’s Head of Retail Motor, said: “A motorcyclist could, behind the wheel of a car, be said to be 23% better.”

Clark presented the data yesterday at a conference organised by the Motorcycle Industry Association to examine evidence that increasing the number of motorcyclists on the road could actually improve safety.

The conference was held in the offices of the Department for Transport in London.

I think it'd be characterized as "23% less squirrely".

Just a shame that Equity Red Star are such shite insurers and are trying to get out of insuring bikes. They took 6 months to agree the repairs on my Thunderbird-when the other side agreed to pay up inb two weeks.

Australian tossers.

A very polite man standing under one of these told me I was about 23% faster than the other motorists just this morning.

Even gave me a certificate to prove it.

Only motorcycle riders know why a dog sticks its head out of a car window.

It's just because we don't drive cars as often :)

Which becomes very evident the first time you drive a truck onto an off ramp at MC speeds.   :o

It's 100% higher than the award given to all those other slowpokes.  :gdog:  They didn't git nuthin'.

Also, I got a look at the new Australian Caprice cop car (first I've seen in the wild). Looks like a Malibu with Dodge headlights. Meh.
Officer Friendly said they're already annoying and WSP will be switching to Exploders soon.

Our department uses the Impalas.  We were going to go with Chargers but we use a federal grant for vehicles and the car has to be made in the United States.  The Chargers are built in Mexico.  As you stated, the Caprice is Australian so that's out.  We have 1 Taurus, but in 30k miles its been out of service 8 times.  Including 6 weeks back to ford after the AWD ate itself.  Now the trans is going.
