So Cal Rds: Santa Monica to Newport Beach ?
« on: May 27, 2014, 09:34:42 AM »
I'm thinking of riding the KLR to So Cal in August to meet up with my son in Newport Beach.

What is the PCH / Hwy 1 like from Santa Monica to Newport Beach?

I'm trying to avoid the crazy freeways.

I'd be coming down on an  August Friday and heading north on Sunday.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.....

Well, it depends.  I mean, do you cared if you get back while it's still light out?

From Santa Monica you could head north, pick off 33 out of Ojai, hang East to Cerro Noreste, south to three canyons, Big T, ACH, Big Bear, south a bit further to 243 with a side detour of Palms, wrap it back over to Warner and Borrego Springs, stop for pie in Julien before turning north to Palomar, Rice Canyon, then west through Ortega before hitting the vaunted nada amazing 405 into Newport Beach.

Yep, you'd definitely avoid the stoplights miles hinted at.

Damn.  Was that really a good idea?

Start here.

Keep clicking the forward arrow until you get to Newport Beach. It'll probably be faster than the actual ride.

God help me I am laughing way too hard.  :rolf:

Frankly, and I'm saying this with a straight face, if you can't do BMW-K's route, lane split the 405 or use the car pool lane down to the 55 or the 73 (toll road - they don't take money any more so just roll on through and let them take a picture of you and send you the bill - www.thetollroads.com). It's not really that bad. Just sing the muppets song while you are lane-splitting.
