Scientists cloned a lady's dog at a price of $100,000 (USD).

PETA says...

Quote
But a spokesman for animal rights organisation PETA said: “It’s understandable that people fantasise about replicating an adored dog but cloning can only replicate genetic material.

“Cloned animals will develop different personalities. We cannot resurrect animals, but we can give living animals in desperate need a chance at a happy life. Every year, millions of homeless animals are euthanised.”

I agree.  While I can appreciate someone wanting to have their favorite pet back (especially after just losing a good friend a few weeks back), why try to recreate the pet?  There are SO many pets out there that need to be adopted.  Three out of our four dogs have been adopted.  The only reason we purchased a "papered" dog is because we wanted to get into AKC confirmation trials.  I have nothing against papered dogs.  When done correctly, they ensure the bloodline of a breed lives on the way it was intended all the while improving the health of the breed.  There's too much of this done incorrectly these days both by breeders who don't do it right and by owners who want a papered dog just to say they own a "pure bread" as a status symbol.

After receiving some criticism from other pet lovers, in addition to PETA, this is what the mother of the new $100,000 pet had to say...

Quote
Rebecca said: “I have seen on pet forums that some people are against it. But the facility where the cloning takes place makes sure the animals are treated well. It is a lovely environment.

I don't believe Rebecca gets it.  It's not about how the pets are treated, it has everything to do with the fact you'll never recreate your old pet and there are many others out there which so need a good home.  Don't waist your money bringing another pet into this world, go find a great pet out there ready to be greeted with open arms.

Honestly, if some woman (or man) with too much money and not enough sense wants to fund scientists so they can continue testing the process in order to, someday, provide cloned organs (for example) for humans at a reliable and much reduced cost, then more power to her.

I think I'd have been happier had she simply adopted a cat or 10 and simply gave her $100,000 to the scientists but it is her money. Who are we to say how she spends it? No one tells me how to spend my money and would likely get a heated word or two if they tried.

I'm interested in finding out years from now how similar the dogs were.

It's her money.  If I had 100k of disposable laying around I'd clone our dog in a heartbeat.

I can't really think of any humans I'd want to help.   :gerg:

I'd help either one of you- or HIV research, or something.  But hey- that's who I am.   :bigok:

I agree with parts of this, and disagree with some parts.

I agree that the person in the article is playing a $100,000 gamble, and may not get what they're envisioning.  While the DNA may be exact to their prior dog, the dog's personality is more than likely to develop quite differently.

Our companion for the last 12 years is a full-papered, purebred Pug.  He will likely be replaced with another, and purchased from a breeder.  I doubt we will replace him with a shelter-dog nor are we likely to adopt one from a Pug rescue type organization.

The article indicates that the only reason to purchase a purebred is for the show circuit.  I disagree.  Our motivation is not to take him to shows.  Our motivation is to purchase a known-quantity in the way of DNA.  Pugs have good and bad points to their DNA, as any other breed does.  We've learned those good and bad points, and, for our use, have determined that we're okay with them.

Our lifestyle and where we live might not be correct for the needs of other dogs, say a beagle-mix from a shelter, that might be better-suited for a 10-acre farm, chasing bunnies.

I do feel sorry for the family of the $100k clone.  They have years ahead of them now, comparing their newly created pet to the prior one.  I hope they're ready to embrace the differences between "Scooter #1" and "Scooter #2", and don't use them as black-marks against their new pet.

Well said.  That is an excellent reason to purchase a papered dog.  When a dog is registered, you can more easily find a good breeder and get a dog that has a much lower risk of various health issues.  Our Briard came from a line that hasn't showed signs of hip dysplasia and we were able obtain an OFA Certification.  Even if we obtain another Briard going forward and don't show it, we take comfort that the dog's bloodline is clean of such defects.

I agree with the papered dog idea- often times you select the breed based on the known characteristics of that breed.  We knew what type of dog we wanted, and began the search.  Low and behold, one showed up at the shelter- a young one, and mostly housebroken to boot!

Now AJ is ours and filled the role perfectly- but I will certainly admit that we got lucky...
