I'm currently shuffling through whatever Triumph is in my library. I don't have all (10?) albums, but a bunch. I do, however, have like 4 different versions of Magic Power, a song I freaking love.

I had the entirety of Foo Fighters playing in my earphones overnight the other night while I was working during an all-nighter to help the caffeine keep me going. Walk from Wasting Light continues to be a total anthem song, and a song that helped get me through some rough shit a few years back.

On the rare occasion that I get to choose, it's from a small library on my phone.  My go to selections are:

Metallica
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
Linkin Park
Evanescence
Depeche Mode
3 Doors Down

If I'm somewhere with connectivity and I get to choose, I'm recently smitten with Home Free covers.

If I'm in a mood, I like Blood and Whore by In This Moment.  But don't tell anyone.

Goodness. Right now nothing is playing, but when it is, it could be anything from Glenn Gould to Joe Pass to Chet Atkins to the Cars to Led Zeppelin to Korn to Dethclok.

With some Zappa and Primus thrown in for balance.....

Note: because it's going to happen - SOMEONE, somewhere on this site is going to come down on me for saying it, and suggesting I shouldn't disparage anyone else's taste in music (which is totally fair given my eclectic choices), "primus sucks" is a thing.

Good friend Johnny wrote and recorded this song, and put the go-pro clip to it.
He plays the drums and guitar. (IMO not bad for a part timer)

At the very end it's me he is chasing. :)

Lots and lots of 3rd wave of Ska bands (Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish in the lead). Also lots of heavy EDM recently. Pendulum, Deadmau5, Adventure Club, Dillon Francis. Changeup is Huey Lewis and the News. I love those guys from back in the day.

OH! recent addition is a couple alboms of Morris Day and the (MF'in) Time! Funky junkies!

I really need to clean up my phone library though, or at least make some playlists. I'm getting to the point that the chaff is beginning to surface on my random plays, and I find myself skipping a lot. Currently at 4287 tracks to random through (306 albums and folder mixes). May be overkill.

So jealous. What I’d give for a high capacity player loaded with music. Downside of country life. Download means something very different out here.

Adding 20$ of SD memory card to a smart phone finally convinced me away from my stand alone mp3 players. An extra 128gb can accommodate a buttload of tunes.

I have been diggin on the 70's music as of late. I am I front of the wood stove now  with my 80's vintage Sony speakers on either side of it listening to the 70's channel on satellite enjoying a two hearted ale. Doesn't get much better. I love for the most part the simplicity of (actual musicians playing music that is not overly produced) and lyrics you can actually understand that usually tell a story.

I absolutely can get you.  I used to think of the 70's as depressing.  But now that I am in my early 50's I totally agree.  I love the singer songwriters of the 70's especially. But I always loved Joni.  With Jaco on bass you will never go wrong.

I loved being five, but I’m right with you Gary  Classically inspired harmonies on “pure” instrumental tracks and a good dubbel.  Most of you would not recognize what’s on my CD player this morning.  Mostly British acid jazz, like Incognito, although one could argue they’re French.

I can't tell you how many times someone mentions Primus and I reflexively say "Primus sucks" and it turns into a whole thing.

I'm glad younger people listen to the "older" stuff, just like we did when we were younger, but man... no one's immersed in the music any more (it seems, other than the super radio proper audiophile). It all feels so drive by. I love that all the information you could ever want is at your finger tips, rather than having to wait up 'til like 11pm to hear an interview with John Wetton or Rick Emmett or John Entwistle on terrestrial radio.

After shampooing the basement carpet, I'm now in the comfy chair in my study listening to Pandora's Celtic Holidays while drinking a Deschutes Obsidian Stout.  My wife is baking Christmas cookies.  The dog is snoozing close to the kitchen just in case something good were to somehow fall on the floor.

Life is good.

I'm really liking Pandora.  It seems that they can find the more obscure, or at least atypical, music that I'm interested in.  There's just not that many people who are interested in Renaissance lute music, for example.

Not QUITE the same, but it would have done your heart good a couple years ago... I bundled up all my old CD collection for yard sale (5 per bundle, 2 good on the outside, 2 ok, and 1 CRAP) and the younguns were FLOCKING to my old metal albums. All the original big 4, Priest, Annihilator, Death Angel, Savatage, Uriah Heep, Sabbath, Def Leppard etc. they were literally salivating.

Not so much the Floyd, Rush, Fleetwood Mac and such... Their parents were grabbing those though. I was pretty surprised actually... I would have figured those going away quicker.

But it was terribly gratifying that the younger set had the fire for the old metal I was fired up about back in the day. I guess it still speaks to the teenage angst.

Streaming don't work for me since I spend a lot of time in places with no connection to the WWW. I've been buying CDs for pennies on the dollar on Amazon, and ripping them at full quality. Automatic backup. Good thing storage is cheap these days. The old iPod is getting pretty full though. May have to look at an alternative player soon.

 Now playing: Metallica - S&M

A BMW-devoted neighbor at my old home was once laid up with a bad back and had little to occupy his mind during the day. So he soon discovered that his dvd player had an input jack which suspiciously looked like it would accept a cord from an external harddrive he had laying about. A little playing around, and he discovered he could record his LPs and CDs onto the harddrive (he must have had something to convert the LPs, but I don't remember what), and then connect the harddrive to play the recorded files through his DVD and home theater system. No artwork to go with it, but it gave him something to do while recovering.

I'm staying out of the kitchen because of more cookies (this time it's butter held together with a little sugar and flour, with slivered almonds on top--the doggo is fixated on the buttery scent).  So it's back to the comfy chair in the study with a snifter of Brandy and Baroque on Pandora.  How can a person listen to Bach and not feel happy?

Listen to some recordings by Django Reinhardt and his band. One microphone. Each musician would step up to the microphone to do their solo. It is so very wonderful.

Benny Goodman 1938 Carnegie Hall concert - it was the first jazz event played at Carnegie. Full band plus his small groups. The musicianship is astonishing. On Amazon Music.

They had to be good; there was only one take.

Listen to some recordings by Django Reinhardt and his band. One microphone. Each musician would step up to the microphone to do their solo. It is so very wonderful.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Django_Reinhardt

Very true. No autotune (hate that stuff). No micro-edits digitally, that pastes together 100 takes into 1 perfect performance.

I'll drop the turd in the punchbowl here, mostly I listen to Tchaikovsky and other classical music as played by the Halle Orchestra or Ralph Vaughn Williams conducting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and various others from Vivaldi, Boccherini, Rachmaninoff etc.

If I want something a little more modern it's early Black Sabbath, Led Zep or Metallica or some good old Tear -in-my-Beer country but for the most part it's old stuff.

I'm normally into Baroque, Renaissance lute, Jazz piano, some Celtic and New Age, but lately I've been playing around with Pandora.  I'm finding that Loreen McKennitt is fun--kinda like Enya but more ballads.  That lead to Blackmore's Night (Deep Purple and Rainbow rocker Blackmore and his vocalist wife Night performing Medieval and Renaissance themed music), Secret Garden (Eurovision winner), and Faun (German mysticism? Pagan Folk?).

You go to hell. You go to hell and die! Or stub your little toe in the night. One or the other.

LT
Seriously. What in the holy name of monster truck fuck was that?

Many years ago, my then pre-teen nieces insisted that I had to watch that video.  They thought it was hilarious!  And it is, if your mind is sufficiently altered by your third Negroni of the evening.

So, my advice is to go on a bender and watch it again.  It gets better with booze, just like The Wall movie.

Years ago, Cookie might have taken your advice. Would a lot of coffee help?

I'll pass but can attest to Jack Danials and copious amounts of good cocaine making the flick "Heavy Metal" at the drive-in most enjoyable.

It's not "new" but it's still a goodie.  Does anyone here remember "Ghost Lobby?"  Wasn't the STN member Bizzaro a part of this band?

Yes he was.

Tonight is 100% vinyl kind of night for me.

J Geils Band, The Morning After
Vanessa Fernandez, When the Levee Breaks
Cowboy Junkies, Trinity Session.

As for the last one, what a unique album.  One stereo microphone, one digital recorder, the band, and a huge empty church.   They recorded the entire album in one night and the acoustics of the church clearly come though.  Soooo good.

I've never been a big fan of heavy metal.  Rage Against the Machine has been one of the exceptions for me.

Yesterday, I was in the hifi shop and Fear Inoculum was playing in the demo room.  When I got home, I streamed the album on Tidal.  Given the feedback, I'm now listening to Undertow.  So far, I'm becoming a fan of Tool.

The funny thing is, I was relaxing to Tool yesterday afternoon before heading out to a symphony orchestra concert.  I love all sorts, I suppose.  :)

I'll add one more to listen to.  After the listening session, I'll head to a new Ramen place downtown for dinner.  Life is good.

My tastes tend to lean to very heavy music and my guess is those tastes and opinions don't align with 99% of the people here. Although I like some mainstream music I really don't listen to it often and my tastes have become more extreme as I get older. I do like the complexity of Tools music and was a fan from the first time I heard them in the 90's. I really liked their originality and found they were so much different from anything that was out there at the time.

I do like some classical music though.  ;)

I can listen to classical, heavy metal ,blues, rock, whatever and be happy if its well done. My tastes really expanded when one of my life long friends and a riding buddy converted his bar into a music bar, with all types of acts performing there. He opened my mind to all the possibilities and we rode to various venues all over the US to see different acts, known and unknown. He retired and sold the place, but is still a bit of a legend in the Pittsburgh music scene. I gotta go to FLA and buy him a gin and tonic for the old days soon.

I'm a big fan of Tool.  I think my disappointment with Fear Inoculum is that it sounds like they took all the cut tape from 10,000 Days and stuck it on a new album, hoping no one would notice.  Maynard has been doing some really cool and interesting stuff in the last decade with Puscifer.  It's very spare, and from that perspective, Fear Inoculum felt over the top to me.  Additionally, all the tracks are 7 minutes or longer with 3 minutes of ideas.

Introduced a buddy to Greta Van Fleet.  He enjoyed them, and I continue to do so.

You posted a while back on facebook about them.   Since then, I've acquired From the Fires.

Cool!  I need another jazz artist to add to my rotation.  Lately, it's been a mix of The Holy Cole Trio, Hiromi, and The L.A. Network.

Pokey's new album is pretty good.  It's a little more topical than his older stuff, and "Fuck Me Up" is a good example of that.

Golden Earring is one of my favorite kinds of bands: Two hit wonders.  OK, yes I know they had a ton of hits in their native Holland, but internationally?  Two big hits.

Another example: The Romantics.

How many two-hit wonder bands can you think of?  I've got quite a list.

Here's a funny anecdote.  Jack Johnson owes his recording career to a bad day for the waves.  He was here in San Diego, sitting on his board waiting for some decent waves when he got to talking to another surfer also from out of town.  He told the guy he's a singer/songwriter, so the second guy says that he'd love to record a song of Johnson's.

https://youtu.be/GWtfXjX-NyY (https://youtu.be/GWtfXjX-NyY)

It turned out to be G Love's biggest hit, and launched Johnson.

Her album with the Nocturnals, "Nothing but Water," is my favorite.  Do you know how difficult it is to find a good copy to purchase?  It's not easy.  I did find a DVD audio version and do have the player for it.  But, it's $50!   :o

The Fearless Flyers latest - Tailwinds.
Oh my (to steal a line I just learned), these guys are so tight I had to loosen my belt. Another one I'd like to hear on R Doug's super system.

Electroswing. Lots and friggen LOTS of it.

Have been listening to Caravan Palace for the last few years, enjoyed the hell out of them but just recently found the 'genre name' that they were identified as (i.e. Electroswing). A quick torrent search dropped a plethora (<-- great word) of tunes/bands categorizing as such. One file held over 36hrs of individual songs (even after I purged anything over 20min long). That'll cover a long weekend!

Caravan Palace - Suzy

STAR WARS - "Cantina band" Cover by LMZG Lamuzgueule (Electro Swing remix)

I spent most of today listening to a series of podcasts about a song:

A great way to spend six hours.
