I don't think it's ugly but I don't buy a bike based on how it looks or how I look on it.  That would just be silly.  :)  The FZ variant looks nice but apparently it is/was really twitchy and some reviewers made reference to it trying to kill them.  :)

It is a LOT of bike for that money.

I'm buying soon and my short list is the FJ-09, current gen Versys 650, and the new/old Bandito.  The FJ-09 negatives for me (based solely on reports) is the need to reflash the ECU, sort the suspension, get a larger, effective windshield, and a new seat.  There's also the questionable styling (why does Yamaha over-style everything?).  However, judging by what I've read and owners to whom I've spoken, all that will be forgotten/overlooked during the first test ride -- the engine and basic handling are supposedly that good. If it's not too tall for my 5'9" self, I may own one soon.

Wife and I sat on one last Saturday.
One small bounce bottomed out the rear shock. We're around 300 lbs combined fully geared. (I've lost some weight)
Seat was terrible.
Her knees were bent farther than on my Concours.
Needs too much to make it a 2up tourer but I bet it would be super fun solo. Just not for me.

It's not twitchy it's just... sensitive.

It has a mode switch. If you bump it in to "Sport" mode, it's pretty feisty but it settles down nicely in "Normal" mode and becomes downright docile in "Rain" mode. I didn't have the same complaints about fueling that everyone else seemed to when the bike first hit the streets but even still, it has improved in later iterations.

I would have an FZ-09 in my garage right now if I could get it with ABS.

I got one. I bought a used '15 with 5800 miles. It's a blast to ride, absolutely nothing but fun. I too think it's ugly, at least from the front, but there's not many modern bikes that I think look good. I just can't stand all the jaggy, pointy, transformer, bug-eyed looks of today's motorcycles. Otherwise, I have no complaints whatsoever. But I'm easy to please - I generally buy a bike every five years or so and I've always bought used ones. In fact, this and my previous one were the only semi-modern bikes I've had. Since I always ride old, cheap bikes, this one is like a Cadillac to me (at least, I imagine so, I've never had a Cadillac either.) Therefore, all the little complaints listed in the replies above are complete non-issues to me. I got it in May and have put about 7000 miles on it since. It's nearly the perfect street bike -  for me.

Wait, I just remembered a complaint that I had. The stock grips suck.

Purchased a used 2015 FJ09 last January with less than 3000 miles.  It came with factory bags, crash bars, and sliders. This bike is a fun twisty bike with plenty of power.

Looks like a great value (assuming you're buying and not selling).  The local dealer (who prices everything high) has a 2015 with 3,000 miles for under 6k.
